Casual racism on Khmer440
In fact it was so well said that somebody with such a high understanding of the language can go back a few pages to read just exactly how long His Lordship shall suffer moderator imposed restraint.

This is a complex issue and I don’t understand how people think it’s so black and white. There appears to have been a line drawn, yet we aren’t told where that line is and what’s ok or not ok. Anyone who questions it is deemed a racist, and those applaud it as long overdue. This is an issue that literally nobody in the world has figured out, so whomever thinks that K440 figured it out should be laughed at.
I’ve posted for six or so years, and I think I can firmly say that I don’t make racist comments (Harold, I love Turkey). But I’ll laugh at some of the jokes, as the one above that was deleted. When I owned the site, I decided that it’s too complex an issue, and I would not ban certain words, because I didn’t want to draw a line. What I banned was specific attacks on people, or specific racist attacks on other people.
As an example, I posted a photo on FB the other day. A poster here that I’m friends with said “nothing gay about that photo”. Clearly that could be read as a homophobic statement. I ask, would that comment be allowed here?

These are great points and somewhat similar to my thoughts on the matter. However, I would argue that we shouldn't follow the approach of the current 'zeitgeist', which is that any questioning of the narrative is promptly shot down. Any movement which doesn't allow dissent is, by default, problematic. For example, Terry Crews recently questioned the BLM movement, asking why, for example, they are a movement against violence to blacks, yet they ignore the biggest killer of blacks, namely gang violence. I don't know enough about the whole thing to know whether Crews was right or not, but it concerns me that he was promptly shot down and talked over by Lemmon, the CNN (NBC?) anchor - his very questioning made him a bad person who was part of the problem and not the solution.Miguelito wrote: ↑Fri Sep 18, 2020 3:02 pmThis is a complex issue and I don’t understand how people think it’s so black and white. I know the above isn't specifically relevant to 440's ban on racist or homophobic terms - which I don't disagree with at all - but perhaps I echo Migs' thoughts in that it's hard to police.
I'd like to know the answer to that question.

Let's put this photo in perspective for those who are not friends with you on Facebook. You are half naked sitting on a big inflatable pink flamingo in a swimming pool sucking on a big bottle.
If a Guest posted that you looked gay I would have disallowed it. If horace posted that you looked gay I would have allowed it.
I disagree that it's homophobic to say that something looks gay. There is no negative connotation to the word "gay", it literally means homosexual, and if you think that's derogatory then I think you're projecting your own homophobia.
Why don't you go ahead and report the comment to Facebook and let us know how they react? I bet they let it stand.
With all due respect I can't think of a single thing that you did as an owner. Passively watching everything pass by isn't the same as taking action.
I think it's fair to say that if a 10% owner of McDonald's started eating at Burger King every day and making it a public issue that he can't say the N-word in McDonald's restaurants he would have been dealt with swiftly.
You let it happen, didn't do anything about it, and that is why it's an inherited problem 3 years later. I'm not buying that you decided that it was too complex. You let a 10% minority owner run over you and openly act against the interests of the site.

I once took some shit for stating on a forum that Vietnamese people are the Nigerians of Asia. I was pissed off it got deleted by a mod for the same reason, projecting his/her racism. Especially as clearly I just meant industrious. Some people are looking to be offended.Alexandra wrote: ↑Fri Sep 18, 2020 5:29 pmIf a Guest posted that you looked gay I would have disallowed it. I’ve just seen the Migs picture. Fuck me sideways.
It’s almost gay NOT to call it gay.
It’s almost gay NOT to call it gay.
Actually term term was taken on by the 'batters for the other side' over several centuries.
"The sexual orientation meaning of the word gay has become so predominant that people hesitate to use the term in its original senses of “merry, lively” and “bright or showy.” But the word's association with sexuality is not new. The word gay has had various senses dealing with sexual conduct since the 17th century. A gay woman was a prostitute, a gay man a womanizer, a gay house a brothel. This sexual world included gay men too, and gay as an adjective in the sexual meaning goes back at least to the late 1930s. After World War II, as social attitudes toward sexuality began to change, gay was applied openly by gay men to themselves, first as an adjective and later as a noun. It is no longer considered slang. Today, the noun often designates only gay men and is usually used as a collective plural: gays and lesbians. How do gays feel about this? But usage as a singular noun is usually perceived as insulting.
It has been argued that gay in the sense “awkward, stupid, or bad” is independent of the sexual sense, and therefore not homophobic. This argument is weakened by the fact that the sexual meaning has long been the dominant one, and thus permeates all usages of gay."
https://www.dictionary.com/browse/gay
At school in England of the early 1990's, was also used as a term for substandard, against the grain, or simply shit, as in 'Your trainers look fucking gay'.
Check this this out for both racism and unintentional homophobic language from the 1960's .
From a linguistic point of view, one loves the evolution of language from descriptive words, into hateful terms (such as the N-word) and totally unrelated words, such as fag and gay into other uses over a generation.
But still wouldn't go shouting out the N word, due to the obvious stuff.

k440, something to do when you're pissed.
So I decided to put this to test by reporting the comment myself to see what Facebook did about it. As I expected they didn't do anything, and like I said earlier I wouldn't have either.
I'm quite sure anyone who sees the photo in question will forgive my momentary lack of wokeness.

Did you snitch me up to Facebook? That's a trifle mean, Alexandra.Alexandra wrote: ↑Fri Sep 18, 2020 7:23 pmSo I decided to put this to test by reporting the comment myself to see what Facebook did about it. As I expected they didn't do anything, and like I said earlier I wouldn't have either.

I do like these comparisons. The Koreans being the Irish of Asia is great. Are there others?
