Mediocre Writer sells Quarantine Article to New York Times
Mediocre Writer sells Quarantine Article to New York Times
Wondering how to get some of my quarantine expenses back. Would love to get published in the New York Times.
(I think I could write a story for Alexandra and K440, but no one reads the front pages and I was hoping for more than a single days hotel expenses. Also, I had a long conversation with a NYT writer once, now moved to The New Yorker, so it's pretty much a done deal.)
Two main problems: 1, I'm not that good a writer. 2. No one is interested in a North American family's Cambodia Quarantine experiences.
However, assuming these minor challenges are surmountable, what 'angle' would the best story take?
(Note, I'm expecting such a huge response to this thread that I am here advising commenters to be patient. You all will eventually have an opportunity to contribute ideas once this website is able to handle the traffic.)

Something that the majority will empathize with and makes them feel smug. That's the stuff I like to read.Guest999 wrote: ↑Sun Nov 15, 2020 3:34 amWondering how to get some of my quarantine expenses back. Would love to get published in the New York Times.

Quarantine is like the opposite of watching a movie, and being on the edge of your seat.
Coffee, tea, tea, coffee. Herbal tea.
Hmmm, what the fock shall i do now?
Coffee.
5pm beer.

"I don't care what the people are thinking, i ain't drunk i'm just drinking"
Why wait until 5pm...it's not like you've got anywhere to be...day drinking is perfectly acceptable, even encouraged, when in quarantine.
I'm not a negative person, I encourage people all the time...it's usually to f**k off! But, whatever.
Throw in child prostitution, it works every time. Nobody's interested in the truth anyway those days.
Oh, fuck off. You know absolutely zero about front page article traffic. I suggest you step off your high horse - and fuck yourself.Guest999 wrote: ↑Sun Nov 15, 2020 3:34 amI think I could write a story for Alexandra and K440, but no one reads the front pages
The last time I wrote a front page article I singlehandedly took down a Ukrainian drug gang and Khmer440 broke the record for most users online. Your quarantine bore would not come close.
What was that article Alexandra? I’ve been reading this forum for about 6 yrs and have read fuck all front page articles so high horseshit isn’t far from the money!
I just looked at the online drug sales article from May, what is after that and how do you find it?

Hmmm....bit of selective editing went on there!

Could be right there.
Drinking is not as much fun (in middle age) as it used to be though i find. Which is a good thing i guess. No excess energy to quell i think.
Alcohol also sometimes seems to make my Shitsville sinus trouble worse.
Might try crack.
I was only forced to be off work for 2 weeks when Covid initially kicked off.
Got abit bored to be honest, but now feeling abit hard done by, what with the majority being on furlough for so long.
It's so unfairrrrr!
The grass is greener.
It's tough being an essential possibly almost frontline worker, whilst the rest just get to doss and eat takeaway pizza.
Then you've got the people on furlough stressing whether or not they have a job to go back to.
Cut backs central.
Have most barang in the KOW been working through it, i wonder?

Fair enough Alexandra, I don't know.
I didn't intend it as insulting to your site as it reads, it was a botched, badly constructed, poorly thought out attempt at humour and humour at your expense. So sorry. (Not expecting a "Sorry" back for your verbal aggression, forums are rough and tumble, but ...)
I've been spreading my high horse thoughts on your forum for a few months already (Admittedly to very mixed response: a few popular, most - too 'high horse'? -much less so.), and I actually considered trying to sell you on something BEFORE the New York Times lightbulb clicked on. I recall Pedros saying articles he wrote were a nice income supplement, ditto, I think, for scoffer (if I guess his identity correctly.)
Anyway, you and Fred are correct that High Horseism, and smugness are among my assorted character flaws. Spittledog is also correct that quarantine certainly has a repetitive monotony about it, it isn't inherently riveting. And, yes, the Ukranian Gang article, that I will now have to read, sounds more vital and interesting.
Like KIR, I know enough about writing to think I could do it, if only I set myself to do so. And like him, imagining myself a writer does not make it true.
Nevertheless, anyone have any other thoughts on an interesting angle for a quarantine piece?
(As a jumping off note, a family of 6 first morning in noise and random ill directed movements reminded me of some movie insane asylum scenes. Say 12 Monkeys, or, less so, ...Cuckoos Nest.)

I'd be curious about Spittledogs question too. If responding posters are fairly honest about it, it is probably worth its own thread.
Family of six? Are you, the wife, and four kids all in one room? Shit.
Yes.
Very tranquil. Just the six of us, 3 laptops, 2 PS4 playstations, and 5 phones. The plan was to give some of the tech to relatives, but they are all in use right now. As are 5-9 small toy cars and trucks, 3-4 action figures, a pile of Lego, and some diapers. Two birthdays have already happened and the now one-year-old has found a way to climb up onto all the furniture, so nothing is safe.
It is a fairly immersive quarantine.

Ok K440 will be my VERY rough draft for my incredibly famous, future, NYT Travel article. If you want the good, shorter version, read it there. (If for some strange reason you want to assist getting it there, do a few hundred thousand google searches for it in the NYT before it is published, so someone, somewhere notices and asks me to submit it. Preferably offering me the more than two figure sum Alexandra has yet to offer.)
