Why do people think older is better? It makes even less sense in the context of anything scientific.
"William Banting (1796-1878) started a low carbohydrate diet at his doctor's behest "
The second paragraph in the link is why "experts" would NOT recommend it.

Experts are sometimes (perhaps often) wrong.
Witness margarine, canola oil were good, eggs were bad, cereal and a big breakfast were necessary, the food pyramid was god. We know now that these were all fads, but doctors, experts and even whole govt departments went along for the ride.
Another thing to bear in mind: everybody's metabolism is different and reacts differently to certain diets. Some people lost a ton on banting, others not much. Some lose a ton on carido, others little.

I'm amused at the speculation about my age, my ability to run and my general overall fitness level.spitthedog wrote: ↑Mon Jan 04, 2021 4:38 am^^^ Fark,
I wonder what Scoffer makes of this gumbo of a thread?
Lets get serious, I've become an overweight lazy git that drinks way to much.
+However, the information being posted about diets and exercise has value and putting my fat gut aside is worthy of further comment
To clarify a few points,
I'm older by 10 years or more than Alexandra suggested in her comparison to the average Australian male.
I cannot run, but I can walk reasonably fast for short burst's - my day to day mobility is somewhat restricted due to structural damage from a mishap of "Car Vrs Motorbike " in my youth. But this has never been an issue for me.
I always take the stairs rather than the elevator.
I manage 3-5 walks per week of 4 to 6 KLM's
The truth of the situation is I don't sleep all that well.
I average about 4, sometimes 5 hours sleep a night.
This has been my sleeping pattern for the past 50 yrs.
Now days I don't eat until it's time for bed -and sleep on a full stomach.
Bad choice on my behalf.
Hopefully that clarifies any comments/ queries about Scoffer.
I refuse to go out with nothing more than a whimper followed by a small farting sound and a shit stain on my bed sheets..
Just thought I'd share that with you.

Scoffer, if you drink too much, you know what you need to do. Try just adding a daily limit or a couple of abstinence days (or move to good ol' vodka, soda and a chunk of lime for some low calorie alcohol).
My advice would be to focus less on your weight and get more active especially with some resistance training. If you don't know where to start, download the free Body-weight Fitness App and do what it says - you can adjust its intensity and you just need a mat.
I'd also push up the cardio a bit. If running is not possible, can you do cycling or swimming?
Others have covered the food angle.

I don't sleep well. Normal for me to sleep good for a few hours, then I'm really struggling to get off again.
I read the other week, that alcohol is evidently known to making you wake you up after a few hours sleep. Something about tricking the brain into you are not tired.
I don't really drink during the week when working, but noticed I sleep worse on a Sunday and Monday night for some reason. Drink over the weekend.
Might be cos I'm dossing over the weekend though.
Dunno

Scoffer, this last post of yours is the problem and Phuket's reply is the solution.Phuket2006 wrote: ↑Tue Jan 05, 2021 5:42 pm"Now days I don't eat until it's time for bed -and sleep on a full stomach.

Someone suggested Scoffer try Push ups.
I met up with him the other day.
At full arm extension, it looks to me that he can only bend his arms about 15cm before he becomes a beached whale and is resting on his ample tummy.

Note to self: Must be nice to morons.
With a user name like 'scoffer' I'm inclined to believe you LJ, but at least he wont be eating anything while he attempts a push-up. And really, that's what it's all about; we eat way more food than we need, especially old duffers like me and scoffer.
