What’s the next thing to disappear in Cambodia?
I was thinking on my commute this morning about the changes in Cambodian society and how things that used to be ‘normal’ are now normal no more.
I remember the thread a few years back discussing about smartphone booking Tuktuk’s and almost everyone ridiculing the possibility of it catching on...and look at us now. Pretty much everyone uses them.
Some things that I don’t really see so much of anymore.
1. Motodop’s - there used to be a few on nearly every corner. Now they are much harder to find.
2. The grandmas walking the streets with bathroom scales, the knife sharpening guy. I rarely see them now.
3. Etjai... am I imagining it or are there fewer of them about. Most waste gets sent to Thailand to recycle. Are there fewer of them due to the border closure?
4. Wing shops. There used to be several on every street. Now with newer competitors and also with money sending apps there are fewer and fewer of them.
5. The Indian(?) guys walking provincial roads selling fabric, pots and pans, watches, magic medicine etc
I wonder though will we soon see a reduction in the number of markets?
Every man, woman and their dog is selling things online. Surely market sellers must be feeling a massive pinch with this. I reckon in a few years we may see fewer regional markets selling anything other than food and just have have half a dozen bigger markets throughout the city.

I see plenty of them about, most waste gets sent to Vietnam but the price went down after the borders were closed.3. Etjai... am I imagining it or are there fewer of them about. Most waste gets sent to Thailand to recycle. Are there fewer of them due to the border closure?

Still plenty of them around.

Romantic Cambodia is dead and gone. It's with McKinley in the grave.

Ok, it’s all in my imagination then.
The grandmas and etjai, maybe you are right. But there are definitely fewer Wing shops than before,
Wing is EVERYWHERE. It’s a huge company. Have you seen their offices!
Another Royal Group company.
See Edjai everyday. Saw two Indian guys today, but they were fixing a train.

"Happy Pizza" places have all but disappeared from Siem Reap, only one left in town that I can think of now & there were quite a few not so long a go.

Unpaved roads. Roaming cows, wildfowl and chickens.

And you don't see a Lexus with lights on full beam driven by some clueless moron using a phone so much these days.

Democracy and the rule of law? Oh no, wait a minute....!
Are those weird blue stickers people put on to pretend their 8 year old cars are factory fresh still 'a thing'?
