Yeah, that was my first though to. There were quite some tarmac roads when I was there in 2003, including Police confiscating big motobikes for those without a driver's license.Lucky Lucan wrote: ↑Fri Feb 05, 2021 7:24 amThere were no paved roads in Sihanoukvillle in 2006? Total bullshit.
They left that place a shithole

I had forgotten how many people had a hate on for the place. Ahhh the good old days. And yes, the nonsense about no paved roads is just that. I went there first in 1996 and there were paved roads back then. Still trying to figure out if I know this Richard guy. Can't think of that many Dutch there, though I did meet a few before the beginning of the end.

The place was always pretty crummy. A port with a semi-derelict rail head and nothing else going on. Some intrepid whiteys came along and built some businesses on the beach, but with the regular bulldozing of these it was hardly surprising that nobody wanted to invest more. It was like a low-rent version of Pattaya for a while. It still had some charm though. What it has become is a grotty cess-pit, I find it hard to believe that anyone would want to go there nowadays.
Romantic Cambodia is dead and gone. It's with McKinley in the grave.

I always enjoyed myself in Sihanoukville. Victory Hill was a bit low rent, as was the town, but Otres was a great beach and it was always a good day and night out; especially if you were there during the week and managed to avoid the weekend crowds.Lucky Lucan wrote: ↑Sat Feb 06, 2021 2:16 amThe place was always pretty crummy. It certainly won't get any better with thousands of uncouth Chinese spitting and shouting their way around town.
I would always seek these kind of places out, in my youf; ramshackle, broken down backwaters that were cheap and no frills, but had a certain charm.Lucky Lucan wrote: ↑Sat Feb 06, 2021 2:16 amThe place was always pretty crummy...It still had some charm though...

Dudes,
There's shitholes and then there's nice, or even lovely shitholes.
Relatively speaking, Phnom Penh is a shithole, compared to even Yangon.
Thailand has become so popular and developed that it has become sterile.
Choose your shitholes wisely.
