Volunteer English Teaching on Mekong Island
Come on a silk Island Adventure to Mekong Island and help provide free English lessons to rural children! We have been doing the program for several months now and it is really amazing, and a great one day break from the hussel and bussel of Phnom Penh.

What's 'hussel & bussel'? Pedantic point over.cambodianthreads wrote:We have been doing the program for several months now and it is really amazing, and a great one day break from the hussel and bussel of Phnom Penh.
Details:
Volunteer English Teachers wanted any Sunday from 8am to 3pm to teach children at the Okay American School in the Village of Prek Bongkong about one hour outside Phnom Penh.
Transportation will be arranged by Cambodian Threads, ( http://cambodianthreads.tumblr.com/ ) a socially responsible business.
'....a socially responsible business' That word says it all? Don't want to knock your project, mate, but why is educating rural kids for free described as a business?
'Okay American School'
Inventive name! How long did it take you to dream that one up? Would love to help a cause, but not a business.
Good luck if it's for real, not if it's for Riel.(Sorry about the rubbish 'joke', but you get the drift.) People who want to help generally seek these things out; projects that advertise for help often can't be trusted, which is why they need to advertise.
Again, good luck! Not knocking the idea.
O, let me not be mad, not mad, sweet heaven

You may be right that the internet is not the place for this, we do not ask for "police certificates" but I do meet with all the volunteers and oversee their performance at the school, along with the full Cambodian staff. The program is in Prek Bongkong which is about 30 minutes outside Phnom Penh (over the Japanese Friendship Bridge, then a short ferry ride) but all transportation is provided after pick up.

I had a look at your website, it's all a bit vague, it appears that you run a business in the US which uses the generic "Free Trade" slogan (with no apparent qualification) to promote your company. After teaching some obscure monk English he asked if you could help with his language "school" and you agreed to provide the extremely generous amount of $250 to assist, wow!
Now you are calling for volunteers, anyone really, who, after surviving your rigorous screening program, will teach english, supervised by your, no doubt, competent, diligent staff, so good of you to pay for transport..
And, of course, it allows you to market your clothing business as "socially responsible", worth every bit of $250 i'd say.
I hope that anyone looking to make a meaningful contribution with their time looks anywhere but at cambodianthreads, cos it looks to me like just another cynical exercise in marketing, and to cloak it as a "worthy cause", well, words fail me..

If you dont want to teach the children English, shut the F#@k up. The bottom line is, they are trying to help poor children learn English. This will help them later in life. Help them or shut up and dont post. Seriously, you posters are assholes.

http://www.amren.com/mtnews/archives/20 ... dal_of.phpThe British founder of a Cambodian orphanage is facing prosecution for sexually assaulting a boy in his care.
Nicholas Griffin, 52, was held when police raided his isolated base in countryside near Siem Reap, in the north-west of the country.
Up to 100 children were moved to a safe house in an operation that involved British and local investigators.
Mr Griffin, originally from Wales, left Britain in 2006 before founding the Cambodia Orphan Fund, one year later.

Who Gives a Fuck?
might be better off teaching them chinese or korean.
The cynics are out in force on this one.
Having some volunteers teaching kids english cant be all bad, surely.
I dont think a pedo would try and sneak under the radar to access kids for a day, would he.
They seem to be much more devious, even to the extent of setting up their own orphanages.

Agreed. It just sticks in the craw that he's doing this to promote his 'ethical' business interests and tug the heartstrings of Western punters who don't know the score. But there are far worse 'worthy causes' out here so I wouldn't knock this one.ken svay wrote:The cynics are out in force on this one.

This doesn't look like a "grooming"exercise, and we agree that exploiting kids for sexual reasons is abhorrent and should be condemned, of course, but you're saying that if they're just exploited for personal financial gain then we should go easy on them and not knock it? because it's less abhorrent? Sorry but i don't buy that, exploitation is exploitation, however you cloak it, and these parasites deserve full condemnation, they certainly have mine.andyinasia wrote:Agreed.
