Bootleg DVD shops to be closed?
I've just heard a rumor that all the bootleg DVD shops in Phnom Penh have been given two weeks to shift their stock and close and this is somehow connected to that new cinema that shows Hollywood schlock. Therefore because some well-connected rich local cocktrumpet wants to show mindless Hollywood crap to the dim-witted masses, we won't get our HBO box sets, our art house movies, BBC documentaries etc etc
Does anybody know anything? Or is this just the usual tittle tattle?

This seems to happen every year or two. There was a crackdown early last year where the police destroyed about half a million DVDs and threatened sellers of pirated material with fines for each DVD they had in their possession. There was a similar crackdown a couple years before that where one of the shops on the edge of Russian market was shut down for about a week.

Sounds like a bullshit rumour to me, especially the part about the new cinema being responsible.

Microsoft arrived in PP this year.
All of a sudden, piracy issues are being taken seriously.
Wow, what a coincidence.
'There are many more jobs and income for pirates out there than for people working in a single movie theater.'
Obviously, but the guys who get the cash don't give a flying fuck about anybody else.

'True, but the thing is that these Western companies CAN'T pay cash to authorities to crack down unless they want to go to jail back home'
You have GOT be joking!

Doubt will make any difference to pirate DVD's availability here long term, the pirate DVD mafia I suspect is bigger than the property developer mafia.

Microsoft have had a presence here for 4 years to my knowledge. They funded the guys who worked on the Khmer unicode project a block over from my place.

In my uneducated opinion this has fuck-all to do with the much needed new theater and more to do with Cambodia having been due to subscribe to some international copyright law, or another, some time in 2011.
Shoot me down if I am wrong, but I recall, vaguely, something to that effect from a while ago.
