Hi all,
I need to find a place that's about a hundred a month until I can get something better. Was offered a room for 50 w/o deposit yesterday - I went to look anyway. Can't do it - third floor, no windows, tin roof, no door, just a gate, about 8 x 8 feet.
I know prices are rising in the city, but there's got to be a half decent place out of the city Barang getting on their feet.
I know inner PP, but I'm lost trying to find outlaying areas, or knowing how to approach the people there.
Does anyone have idiot directions and good suggestions? (Can drive up to 15 minutes or so to town.) I'd prefer something quieter and closer to the countryside.
Thanks
$100 for temp place

I think there was a discussion here about 2-3 months ago regarding $50 -$100 per month places.

I'll do a search for that. Thanks.
Anyone with updates would be great. I get pretty confused trying to get my bearings as far as neighborhoods and areas.
Edit: Do you have a link to that conversation. Can't seem to find it...

Get a big map, the city isn't very big itself and shouldn't be hard to figure out as it's mostly grids. To approach the people, just raise your right hand with the palm facing forward and say "How."peragrate wrote: I know inner PP, but I'm lost trying to find outlaying areas, or knowing how to approach the people there.

I cant find it either. Maybe I am losing my mind. Just go for the 8 X 8 feet $50 per month place. Doors are overrated.

Try renting one of the small places where Khmer migrant workers stay (I think). Not very big, maybe 3m x3m, louvre window, toilet, door. Will be noisy.
I don't think you'll find anything decent below $100, times are changing, but I don't know what your definition of decent is.
Why don't you state exactly what you what and then I/ we can try and find it for you?
Maybe Chbar Ampoul (sp?) or on the N. side of the Chruoy Changvar roundabout or other side of the bridge.

Thanks everyone. I've noticed that the "good ole days" are rapidly disappearing. This is the situation. I'm broke (like many others).
I can't afford a deposit, because my "career" as a teacher is pretty well much finished. (It's just that things move in cycles, and that cycle is coming to an end or it has come to an end. Maybe I'm just tired of being paid just enough to get by. Perhaps there's one more part-time job somewhere, but after six years of teaching, you'd think I wouldn't be broke.)
I'm not a party animal either. I used to drink, but not anymore. (Even so, I did the math two years ago, and basically I could drink at least a six-pack every night and still come out on top? So where did it go? Flying here, flying there, deposits, to be eventually donated whether I like it or not furniture, visa after visa after Goddamned visa, shit schools with their heads up their ass. My attitude wasn't always like this.)
Nope. I'm stuck in Cambodia with 600 bucks to my name, a guesthouse that cost one third of that, and a bike I need. (Same old shit - Sure am glad all those ESL owners are driving around in Mercedes thanks to me and other disposables.) I enjoy teaching, at least I did for the first four or five years, until I realized what a tool I've been.
So. There it is in a nut shell. I'm looking for somewhere that doesn't give me the hebbie-jebbies, where neighbors don't look at me like I'm there to buy a kid, and the last remaining vestiges of my life won't get stolen. I'm very private: I just like to be left alone.
(If I had an army tent, I'd pitch by a river in the middle of nowhere and call it a day.) If it isn't quiet, I'll buy ear plugs, but since I've given up on teaching, the father away from the city the better. (I use a cellular dongle for Internet which is supposed to be good "all over Cambodia.")
P.S: For those of you out there that are broke too, I think there's a good service by a guy named Tin-tin on this board. He did me pretty good. Something about a special discounted Metfone Internet account...
Thanks all,
Peragrate.
Sorry for ranting a bit... but got home after driving all day... I'm trying to get work on line since teaching has finally fizzled out, but that's also a joke. (Excuse me, but I'm not feeling very P.C. today - Competing with a billion "will do anything for a dollar", "Make .0002 cent per click", or how about: "I made $197,284 in 7 days flat, and you can too! Just pay me $69 for my super-duper auto-money system.")
I drove south down Monivong, over the bridge, up and down side-streets (and I'm pretty sure some of them have never seen a foreigner except on TV). I got fed up of looking, and stopped to play volley ball for half-an-hour. Then I drove north of Japanese friendship bridge and found nothing. So I started driving west... nothing. Last week I cruised Diamond Island...nothing.
Good news though: at least I can tell the difference between a For Sale and For Rent sign.
Up and down so many side roads I can't even remember them all. There are some cheap places in Siem Reap, but I'm tired of the man telling me to move on.

PM me your number. I will get my brother in law to find you a place. You will need to pay him petrol money and something for finding the place, I can't do it, I am working full time.I'm pretty sure you will be looking at Khmer neighbours, so if you can't speak much Khmer, you would be left alone.
In the meantime, if you could draw the areas where you want to live on a map of PP and think about what you need, that would be helpful.

Thanks. PM sent.
Looking at the bright side. Two Cambodians randomly helped me today. It was just a sentence from each one, and those sentences made a few confusing things make perfect sense. That is the great thing about traveling... you get to meet nice people when and where you least expect it.

Interesting thread. I can understand your frustration.
I know it may sound funny but talk to some bar girls. Most rent out 50$-100$ places, but they are exactly as mentioned: ~3X3m, one squat toilet and a window. Quietness not assured. But they do exist even in the central parts of the city. But if you go on Kilo 6, or other outskirt parts you can find some places for as low as 25$, sometimes even less (I had a student who's parents rented rooms for 15$, he asked me if I needed one, haha). But you sound like you want a minimum standard of living. So I think maybe 75-120$ would be possible. If you know any khmers, ask them. They'll know of places for 120$ and less. They won't be very nice but if you're short on your last 600$, I don't think being too picky is an option. If anything you can get a cheap place for 70$ for a month or two until you find something which will accommodate your needs better (privacy, quiet, etc).
If you don't mind me asking, what line of work are you looking to get into, now that teaching is no longer an option? Is online work really possible to find? Keep us posted on what's going on and good luck.

Thanks for that reply. I'm going to read it carefully again tomorrow morning. I never though of asking a bar girl.
What line of work? Not sure.
Is there work online? A little.
Are there scams online? A million.
So there's mountains and mountains of junk to sort through.
If you're specialized in something, I guess you could do consulting.
Good Knight.
