Lose weight?
I'm at least25Kg overweight, despite starting some diets that usually end up failing shortly after the start date.I know that there are several people out there like me, so I had an idea, any constructive, non-psycho criticism welcome:
We get 10 or more people together who would like to lose weight and they get weighed by a third party, perhaps at a bar.
Every entrant pays $10 into the kitty, minimum $100.
We set a realistic date, say 6 months, and the winner (person who loses the most/ reaches his/ her target weight first wins the kitty. We could have weekly/ fortnightly updates on K440, permission forthcoming, of course.
An additional benefit might be Virtual Weight Loss, similar to Virtual Soccer, so that non-fatties can bet on the outcome.Proceeds of this to be decided by bar weighing. It's got motivation and support to encourage participant commitment.
I am aware of the fact that a weight loss contest is unusual for a bar, but no prisons will cooperate.
Anyone interested?

Better still Vlad, why don't you sell the rights to CTN and make it a weekly episode - Cambodia's Biggest Loser......

Diuretics would work for the first day, maybe 1-2 kg, but over 6 months it would be hard to do. It would actually be advantageous to eat stacks before the initial weigh-in.You would appear to have lost 3kg without even trying a few days later, but could you keep it up?BirdBrain wrote:So would it be the person who drops the most kg's, by % or who reduces their BMI the most. Is it open to people willing to undergo surgery like a gastric band or even liposuction?
The most Kgs.Otherwise some anorexic model loses 1 kg and wins.People who can afford surgery don't need a measly $100
Would the results be verified again after another 12 months as most overweight people simply yoyo and gain more then they lose down the track.
No 12 month re-weigh.Too much admin
What about drug testing. Someone with full blown AIDS that's also regularly using meth could probably lose more weight then any fatty.
I don't thing anyone with full-blown AIDS wants to lose weight, so they probably wouldn't enter in the first place.People who would be prepared to use meth are probably using it already, and need to gain weight
Maybe even just cheat the weigh in and consume a heap of diuretics the day before like boxers do.
Chubacca, that title has already been taken, but let's not tell the world about him.Nice Title though, I think they use it in the States.

You can't judge it by kgs. Someone who is morbidly obese could easily drop a couple dozen kgs by simply doing 10 jumping jacks every day, whereas someone who is slightly overweight would need to change their diet completely, quit drinking and exercise daily in order to get the same results.vladimir wrote:BirdBrain wrote:So would it be the person who drops the most kg's, by % or who reduces their BMI the most. In no particular order:
a. regular sleep
b. a balanced diet
c. don't double carb, i.e don't eat rice & bread
d. if you drink beer try and reduce the volume
e. don't eat within 2-3 hours of you going to sleep
f. at least 20 minutes of light exercise every day which can be built on, swimming is excellent for this, otherwise walking, some cardio at a gym
Muscle generally weighs twice the amount of fat so you may not see a reduction in weight immediately as you begin to tone up but then the excess weight
will be lost.
Weight loss is about sensible exercise, sleep and diet. It also takes time to adjust your body to a new regime so the weight loss will be slow but as your body gets used to the new regime it means when you have lost the weight you want and continue with the 'healthy lifestyle' you won't be prone to a massive binges after you hit your target weight and just put the weight back on.

That's interesting that you put on weight since returning to Australia. Are you eating/drinking more or are you living a more sedentary lifestyle?BirdBrain wrote:Regrettably since relocating have put it all back on now.

shizzle I agree with part of your argument, but don't you think that someone who loses 25Kg or more deserves more recognition/ changes their life more than someone who loses 5? The idea is for people who are seriously overweight, not people who have their first love handles.
There are 3 ways to lose weight:
1) Eat less
2) Exercise
3) Get / make oneself very sick
Most sensible people understand they have to use a combination of 1 and 2 above. Some dead ones tried using 3.
I disagree with this statement:
'Someone who is morbidly obese could easily drop a couple dozen kgs by simply doing 10 jumping jacks every day,'
I think you'd need to do at least an hour's cycling, cardio a day to drop a couple dozen kgs, and over the course of a few months.

Change your diet and avoid sugars / carbs.
I lost 16.5kg in less than 3 months (around 20% of body weight) in 2009 just through changing what I ate, exercising a little, and eating a little less. No adverse effects. I weigh 1.5kg more today than I did when I finished the diet.

Ct2U, Well done, but I don't understand what you mean.
You say 'No'' , and then go on to support what I said:
1. You ate less (in terms of calories/carbs)
2. You exercised
Do you mean no to my skepticism over the star jumps theory?

Changing your diet is different to eating less. I got some mates back home that are PTs and dietitians and they bang on about it all the time.
I would add one more to your "how to lose weight" list though. Amphetamines! Or smack. Actually there are many narcotics that would help The only problem is that they are quite morish. Get on the base for a month and then job's a good 'un. The only problem you have then is that you're a raging speed-freak.

No fun losing weight , you will need to be dedicated to reduce years of built up lard. Not sure how many wanting to lose weight are prepared for the sacrifice.
Vladamir , lets use you as an example. What do you eat and drink each day ? Would you be prepared to cut out all the bad stuff for 6 months ? If you can last 6 months it becomes a lot easier.
Losing weight takes effort and time , most give up because they don't see results soon enough. Can be done though.
I know a restaurant owner in BKK 1 that lost a heap of weight because he was dedicated. I wont mention his name if he reads this he may identify himself. He gave up all alcohol and execises daily.
Get started 5 km walk twice a day , eat well and after a month start some light weight training nothing too fancy just the standard push/pull exercises.
I train almost everyday , I dont enjoy it all that much but I feel great once the workouts over.

Word of wisdom from the mouth of the prophet.Khmeria wrote:Diets are for fat people.
If you don't want to be a fat person, you need to make lasting lifestyle changes.
Lucky7, I generally don't drink if I am working the next day, so only on weekends, and seldom drink beer if red wine is a reasonable price.I never drink milk, eat ice cream or drink stuff like Coke etc.I drink black coffee without milk, use sweeteners.I drink lots of water during the day.
I usually eat Khmer food 3 times a day and I'm pretty sure that is the main problem: too much fried food, oil, salt, sugar, msg, asking my wife not to add it is just a joke if you know anything about Khmer 'cooking'.
From tomorrow it will only be Khmer food once a day (at lunch), if that, and an hour of cardio at lunch. No food after 7pm.I will keep a record of everything I eat/ drink.
Maybe some additional exercise before sleep. Let's see what happens. I actually wanted other people on board for mutual encouragement and support, maybe a few will join virtually.
