Actually, Cambodia Beer doesn't have incompetent marketing managers, so you drew a line where there was none.
As for the bad batch, it's not a secret. The last thing they want is for people to think that all the cans are non-carbonated.
But yes, wise words. Some things could be interpreted in many ways, and I'm going to ask the mods to change my username (or to delete my account). I'd be grateful if you deleted my name from your message.
Thanks!

The best ad I've seen in Cambodia is Beeline where they cast actual looking Khmers with awesome lines and execution, too bad the viewers dont find its cool. Whereas that dumb PP bimbo and the chicken head dude for Cellcard received better attention.
Everyone bow down and pay extreme homage to his Majesty flying chicken.
Beeline seem to spend lots of money but are still not very big in terms of subscribers (not even top 5) and they don't have 3G which badly hurts their competitiveness.
It must suck to be an investor in any Cambodian telecom since they are all mostly bleeding money and spending fortunes chasing after some of the lowest value users in Asia.
Some of them do have nice advertising but I don't know if that is enough for them to survive unless they all start merging pretty soon.

I don't know about Cambodia Beer and didn't intend to imply they had incompetent management.
However they did copy their launch TV commercial frame by frame from an Australian beer commercial. They even copied the same music and the end part is copied from another beer competitor as well which would be considered breaches of copyright in other countries as well as being extremely embarrassing for their brand.
Whether or not that applies under Cambodian law I am not sure but it doesn't reflect very well on them in any case.

You mean the TVC where a bunch of guys run in a valley and form the shape of a guy drinking beer when seen from top down? Seen it, but come on, that's hardly "frame by frame".
As for the music, it's 100% original. Reminds me a bit of Carmina Burana though.
I would appreciate it if you could name the brand on which the ending of the TVC has been copied. That's a new one to me.

This is the Carlton Beer Ad from 2005 by Y&R Australia which won over 30 awards including Gold Lion from Cannes and has over a million YouTube views:
This is the Cambodia Beer Ad from 2011 which looks ever so similar and has 60 YouTube views:
A number of shots and concepts have clearly been taken from the original advert (the hills, the people, the music etc). The main difference is that the Aussies got the joke.
The Cambodian version is just plain freaky. It looks dark, sounds creepy and has people that look like they are running away in fear in some sort of mass evacuation.

Hm. I must admit that this looks pretty bad.
Also worth mentioning: the Creative Director for Cambodia Beer's TVC used to work at Y&R, he is Australian and he also won a Gold Lion at Cannes.

Hey Khmerized since your profession is in this field, if you dont mind me asking a question or 2.
I am currently in my final year completing my Bcom in marketing management. With my cultural background and being fluent in Khmer and English are perhaps my advantages. Is it worth pursuing this career in Cambodia, and what about the typical start up salary for a newbie? Or am I better off climbing corporate ladder back home?

The most obvious mistake in the Camb adv was that the construction workers were wearing safety hats and full length foot coverings ( if you can call a gum boot a foot covering )
I refuse to go out with nothing more than a whimper followed by a small farting sound and a shit stain on my bed sheets..
Just thought I'd share that with you.

Haha, the Cambodian one was hilarious! Not frame by frame though, but definitely copy-cats!

This is a tough one. First, I must point out that I can't answer the salary question because I come from a quite atypical background for advertising. I have BA in Political Sciences from a prestigious French university, I grew up here (high school) but don't speak Khmer well enough to really use it at work, and I haven't finished my Master's in communication yet.flying chicken wrote:Hey Khmerized since your profession is in this field, if you dont mind me asking a question or 2.

Some barangs on top of the ladder here make a shitload of money, but they all have pretty impressive CVs full of famous agency names. I used to work in a chamber of commerce before I found my position here, and the closest thing to communication I did was setting up a web design studio in back in Europe.
I'd say Cambodia is an interesting market because it isn't overloaded with high-standard advertising (yet). It's developing quickly, which means an increasingly consumerist society, which will make advertising more powerful and important. Also, the increasing popularity of internet and social (mobile) media will give advertising agencies many opportunities to come up with interesting ideas in the years to come.
On the other hand, there's the issue of a wide-spread lack of taste, as discussed before, and some quite frustrating corporate structures. Good designers in Cambodia are scarce and so are clients who really know what they are doing (i.e. have a road map that extends beyond 6 months).
I'd say working here is a challenge, but I learned a LOT since I started here. One thing's for sure: it's not boring.
Climbing the ladder at a big agency in the western world is an important step as well, as it will give you more legitimacy when you come up with crazy ideas (and a bigger salary). That's next on my plan.
But I'm sure there are some other people on this forum that are far more experienced and qualified to answer your questions.
