Should Western embassy personnel hang out in hostess bars?
Here's our January poll and a new submission from Gavinmac.
Walt Disney World famously trains its costumed cast members to be “in character” not just when they are “on stage,” but whenever they are in any part of the theme park where a guest could see them. Disney even put different colored cement in the “back stage” areas of the park, alerting cast members when they are standing in a place where they might inadvertently be seen by guests. That way, no child is ever traumatized by looking off to the side of a stage and seeing Mickey Mouse taking his head off.
To me, seeing U.S. embassy employees romping about in hostess bars is like seeing Mickey Mouse taking his head off. It’s unsettling, and it saps any confidence that I may have in the embassy’s overall work. It’s a bit like seeing your financial manager playing craps in the high limit room at Caesars Palace. Or seeing your wife’s gynecologist sitting right up front by the stage at your local all-nude strip club. It’s unnerving.

Way to much time on your hands gm to write such dribble, you need to go and get laid more
I think Western Embassies should hire only eunuchs to work as staff. Problem solved.
Some men you just can't reach. So you get what we had here last week, which is the way he wants it... well, he gets it. I don't like it any more than you men.

My comment might be too long for the front page, so I'll post here.
GM, you have explained why you single out embassy staff, but others might see that as an arbitrary line to draw. I was reflecting on my situation over this weekend as I attended a rural wedding. I was the only white face among 500+ guests; moreover, I am the only white guy most of those Cambodians have ever seen in their lives. I am self-consciously aware that across the community I am deemed a "good man". I hate that; I am a publicity-shy, anonymity-craving kinda dude but the reality is that unwillingly, I represent who whole race of Caucasian males to that group of Cambodians. When some of the hard-drinking guests invite me to join their drinking competitions, or my sexy slutty sister-in-law tries to make out with me, I am aware of my unwelcome responsibilities. Should I be?
Maybe a more pertinent example is teachers. My management never tires of reminding its teaching staff that we are moral exemplars for our students (they never seem to care about our professional competence, or screwing us around but that's another matter). Many posters here are repulsed by teachers who whore around, routinely get drunk and take drugs. Should we be? Should we draw the line at no sex or drug-taking with students and all else is private? That wouldn't sit comfortably with me.

I came, I argued, I'm out
You sure have had Western embassy staff on your mind a bit of late KiR; has one of them interfered with you?

Well, I've just checked the online poll and at this very early stage, the nays are edging ahead of the yays.

A few things here,
1st, I wonder what the actual official regs are for the staff. Soldiers, Marine Corps Guards for example, can be prosecuted for conduct unbecoming a Marine.
2nd, If said personnel signed a contract, which forbids such activity then too bad too sad for then. Otherwise, they have a right to do so.
3rd, You are correct that it undermines the image of the US. But that is not saying much. People hate America for far larger and better reasons. Let's be honest, how many people are really going to lose respect for America because some staffers go to the Heart of Darkness?
4th, One problem with the US government, especially in the area of espionage, are the regulations that lead to recruiting from eggheads and moral prudes. You can never get real security clearance if you have done LSD, for example. If the US wants to engage in effective information gathering and counter terrorism, it is compelled to get its hands dirty and both recruit from people with questionable backgrounds as well as have its people frequent unsavory places.
(Of course, I am not advocating that the man keep tabs on its people or the locals. But all embassies do that sort of thing. So long as they do it, they should do it right. In fact, I propose that the embassy secretly hire Gavinmac. He has great a cover, doesn't look like a spook and has a good knowlegde of the country and expats.)

That's right. Shop smart. Shop S-Mart.
Good idea mate, the US is running out of prudish religious weirdos who think that drugs are bad and will soon have a staff shortage.

Listen, I am always willing to help a friend out. For the next family wedding, I will tag along and block those sisters-in-law for you. I will even get black out drunk if you want. Just think, when people compare my drunken antics to your behavior, you will effortlessly become the paragon of virtue.andyinasia wrote:I was reflecting on my situation over this weekend as I attended a rural wedding. Have a look on my latest post on the "cheeky" thread - about some other reflections on the wedding. In retrospect it occurred to me that I should have invited you and a few other willing K440 victims. Maybe next time, although we only have one single sister left ...
I came, I argued, I'm out
Mousing over the photo accompanying the article produces a pop-up saying only “Hostess”. I’m unable to comment on this vitally important topic until I know the workplace of the unnamed hostess on the left and verification she’s still employed and not yet fat. Forget the one on the right.
Meaning you have successfully pimped away the others already? Very classily done, sir.AnidyinAsia wrote:Maybe next time, although we only have one single sister left ...
