Going rate for content writers
Going rate for content writers
Does anyone know the current going rate for content writers?
I've been told around 5 cents a word in PP and 7 cents in Bangkok.

There is no 'going rate' as it's not like hiring a motordop or a taxi. There is no flat rate.
We pay all our writers but they get different rates. So we have people writing for us who are experienced media professionals and we also have people writing for us who are less experienced. Obviously, they don't get the same fee.

I'd expect professionals to be better paid than non pros, however I would expect that if you were writing articles to fill a space in a magazine you would have a per word rate. It might vary greatly depending on skill level but it would fit into a range much as English teaching does.
I've talked to several people including those in the publishing industry and they indicated the per word rate was 5 to 7 cents. That was over a year ago and I was wondering if things had changed much.

I know that the Pearnik had a standard word rate a few years ago (5 cents a word, I think) but they had a lot more advertising back then and there were far fewer decent writers in town and zero competition. Times change.
These days there are more websites/publications in Cambodia plus plenty more writers so there are lots of different factors at play. Good writers can pick and choose what suits them as can established websites/publications.
So I think you'll find it very difficult to start from scratch and attract talented writers unless you start throwing serious amounts of money around and even then, given your background in the nightlife industry, the better writers may choose not to take your cash. However, I'm sure you could go up against the Peanik with the same standard of writing - but given the way Phnom Penh is changing, that's a shrinking market so would you really want to?

Nothing is easy, especially starting from scratch. The writers I have talked to seem to be happy to work with me so really it's just a matter of ensuring everyone gets paid on time.
As long as it stops me from having to teach English it's worth the effort. Even 69´s website which I never finished still makes $4 a month of google. Not a lot but it only costs about $1 month to run. DV8's generated 150 month, which is my target per website. So having content to put on them makes sense.

I was on 1 baht a word and if I remember right 20 baht a photo when I wrote Pattaya Guide for Asian Journals back in the late 80s. The photos were the earner. Get a sure 20 from a roll of 36. 20 x 20 = 400 baht return for 100 baht outlay.
I used a Commodore 64 to do the writing. Printed to fan fold on a dot matrix and sent by post to BKK.

You don't pay a riel to your writers...stop lying. Seriously, you can get that out with a straight face?keeping_it_riel wrote:There is no 'going rate' as it's not like hiring a motordop or a taxi. There is no flat rate.

Correct. We don't pay riel to our writers - we pay dollars.
You honestly think we'd get a professional journalist to write a weekly column for us just for fun and because we're such nice people. Dream on.

So what is the rate for noncontent (aka 'content free') writers? Aren't content writers automatic members of the department of redundancy department?

Right Nightmare, let's have a link please to the article of yours I supposedly plagiarised plus a link to my own copy. And we'll let our readers be the judge.
