i find this helps a lot with queue jumpers
you can either say "ot meuhn chua?" = "theres no queue?"
or you can say "dom rong chua" = "get in the queue"
up to you if you want to say please or not.

Those are good. I always drop the "Knnyom" though.Sambo wrote:I'm hungry - Khnyom khlien bay.

Tov nome = go to peecambod wrote:What about "I need to pee."
Something like...
"Chua nome"
Kynom som tov choo nome = Can i go to take pee/ i need to go take a pee
choo nom = pee (but Khmers would understand what you trying say, but if stressing a question mark at the end, the other party might confuse you wanting him/her take a pee)

You can just say tro, you don't need to say tro-kar.flying chicken wrote:I need some medicine - Knnyom trovw kar (gar) thnam.

Trov by itself implies you are being hit or affected by something. Trov gar = needshizzle wrote: You can just say tro, you don't need to say tro-kar.
.
Kynom trov dek = I must sleep
Kynom trov tnum = you are poisoned by a certain medicine/ affected by a certain medicine
Kynom trov kar tnum = I need some medicine

trov - ត្រូវ : correctflying chicken wrote:Trov by itself implies you are being hit or affected by something. Trov gar = needshizzle wrote: You can just say tro, you don't need to say tro-kar.

Kynom trov dek = I must sleep
Kynom trov tnum = you are poisoned by a certain medicine/ affected by a certain medicine
Kynom trov kar tnum = I need some medicine
gar - ការ : action (roughly)
I wouldn't pull khmer words apart like that as you will often be looking for logic where there is none, it's one word ត្រូវការ
It's the same as English, for example 'breakfast' is 'break' and 'fast' but as native speakers we don't think of it that way.
Why am I not surprised...shizzle wrote:...

We had this conversation on here before, but this is why it's so important to learn to read Khmer, some words are so similar it's easy to think they are all the same word, a bit like there, their and they're in English, especially when they're used in similar contexts.
I used to get a few of these mixed up before I learned to read - ដើរ/dair : walk & ដល់/dal : arrive/up to/until & ដែល/dail : which/who/that & តែ/dai : but/however
The differences in sound are so subtle it's easy miss and then make the assumption that some of them are the same word when they're not.

You are right.
But so far I can tell from the context whether the sentence is correct or incorrect. I am not picking the choice of romanisation posters chooses -- I correct a few to make it sounds close to the native ears as possible.

Also a tip for learning the alphabet, forget trying to say the sounds in the beginning. If you just learn to recognise them when a native speaker reads them and sound them out in your head when you see them written, then you can learn the system in a few days, trying to pronounce them all is what slows people down.
