Best items to give begging kids?
My question is sincere so sincere answers appreciated.
When I was in East Timor, pretty much all the kids begged (a small minority even got nasty - first time I had ever experienced that from kids in Asia).
I don't have the heart to ignore kids who have nothing/lack opportunities in life, so, as long as they weren't being obnoxious, I got into the habit of giving them either a tidbit of chocolate or some mandarin type fruit (easy to carry around without it spoiling, and could be bought from child vendors). This seemed to go down fairly well.
Any suggestions on basic items I could give begging kids in Cambodia appreciated. Food always seems the obvious one as you can buy it anywhere and I tend to always carry some food on me anyway when travelling.
Obviously if a kid guides me somewhere nearby on foot, I'll happily give them the equivalent of 50c.

Give them nothing. To give anything would support child labour and trafficking.

I always carry a bamboo around to chase away the cheeky rascals.

Kids do tend to follow you around when you visit temples in the boonies, and make a fucking nuisance of themselves pointing out obvious stuff etc.

If I have time, I pull a piece of paper out of a book and draw caricatures of them, or make a paper dart.
If I'm lazy I give them a 100 riel note. At first I was reluctant to do so but I've been worn down.
Kids at temples........please sir watch your step, would you like to buy a scarf, mind your head madame, would you like to buy a scarf, giggle giggle, the next temple is this way sir, would you like to buy a scarf, pout, sad face, pout, giggle.
Look kids! A bus load of rich French tourists!

Some men you just can't reach. So you get what we had here last week, which is the way he wants it... well, he gets it. I don't like it any more than you men.

Get some small change before you go and give them 1,000r each. They'll most likely ask for more as soon as they see cash.
They can be a real pain in the neck as they're not often needed as guides, and once they've attached themselves to your visit, you won't easily shake them off. Spend a few hours looking around a place and the pushier ones may ask for more as they've been tugging at your sleeve and jumping into any photos for a whole afternoon.
Oudong's a good example. After unwanted pestering for an entire visit, they were shouting for $$s when I returned to the car.

Yes.......I'm sure this question has been asked before. Only 1st an last time I gave a girl 1oo Riel at Siem Reap....then a thousand kids came running, from bloody miles away, I swear mate the little rascals could smell it. Last time in Boracay, Philippines, I saw this street kid looking into the kitchen window of a restaurant. I bought her a hamburger, she then ran off, never saw if she ate it, or gave it to her family. I've also been asked numerous times in Melbourne, Australia.....although, these type of homeless people are on the street for different reasons.
I don't think there is really answer to this problem. Unless the Cambodian Government do something about it (which i know isn't going to happen) I also think, in comparison to say Manila, the problem isn't as in 'your face'. So diamond lady, whilst I admire your intentions, I think showing any sign of generosity, will wear you thin in a matter of days, and may well compromise you in the future....

I had a little bastard at Tamao mountain try to charge my daughter about 14 dollars for throwing 7 coconuts to the elephants. I said I'll pay for the 2 she gave the elephant, you can pay for the 5 extra you threw in there yourself. The little bugger didn't take it very well. He also tried to charge 5 dollars for a small plate of sugar cane that he had given my daughter to feed the monkeys. Tried to tell me sugar cane was more expensive there because it had to be brought in from Phnom Penh.
Little brats like that can ruin a day. I also had to pay some other little urchins not to mess with my moto while we wondered around.
Lesson of the day was don't let your mother let urchins guide you around Tamao mountain, get one of the official ones at the gate.
