Another trafficking fraud
Another trafficking fraud
This mornings daily has story about trafficking which appears to be a complete fabrication. The victim whose story has been relayed around the world was allegedly stabbed in the eye by the brothel owner.
And it gets even better, despite the injury she was still forced to work immediately afterwards.
Thanks to the Daily exposing the story,it seems to be a complete fraud.
The girl had an eye operation at the Takeo hospital in 2005 to remove a tumour, neighbours of the family were interviewed and recalled the girls condition and their fears that she may not survive the procedure.
The surgeon is also quoted and of course he has documentary evidence, these pesky medical people and their insistence on keeping records!
I know the opthamologist,a straight up guy who works for the fred hollows foundation at the clinic in Takeo, its a great facility for poor khmers.
The barang lady spokesman for somaly mam or was it apeshit was outraged by the journos questions amd claimed that she was being bullied.
If trafficking is as pervasive as claimed why do they need to tell so many lies about victims?
I guess the better the story, the more money raised.

One-eyed chicks are very popular with the punters for skull fucking.

My initial reaction is to feel concern for this girl who has been exploited by AFESIP and Somaly Mam - no doubt one of many. A poor country girl from a difficult background that fell in with a bad crowd (i.e. AFESIP) who saw in her the potential to increase fame and fortune for their organization. I don't know whether she concocted this story on her own or with the help of AFESIP, but it was certainly while under their 'care' and well within their ordinary operating practices. Somaly herself has, of course, been exposed fabricating stories to further her organization. And AFESIP is well known for exploiting the (supposed) victims they are supposedly protecting - repeatedly parading them in front of media and even tourists in the hope of eliciting support and funds, just like they did to this girl. Certainly the environment she was in encouraged such fabrications, implicitly if not explicitly. I hope she and her family are OK with the money and fame she has earned lying for AFESIP, but it does concern me that a spotlight has been turned on her - a poor sheltered country girl who fell into something much bigger than herself - and not on the organization and Somaly who would exploit people like her.
If that's true it makes me feel sick to the stomach. As someone who is in the middle of a very real possible child trafficking nightmare of a child I consider family, knowing that someone would fabricate such a story makes me sickened.

As LTO says, AFESIP have plenty of 'form' when it comes to concocting attention-seeking fabricated stories.
Add this to the recent revelation of the expat trafficking NGO director who has awarded himself a $150k company car (plus chauffer) and it becomes clear that the trafficing industry attracts some real chancers.

Woah..lets not all jump to conclusions here.... said expat trafficking NGO director is also a partner in another very profitable private business here in Phnom Penh. And imo, that NGO does a lot of great work in the grand scheme of things.keeping_it_riel wrote:As LTO says, AFESIP have plenty of 'form' when it comes to concocting attention-seeking fabricated stories.

What will be more telling is if there will be a libel suit for the Daily.

Considering that in response to difficult questions the AFESIP spokesperson has taken a tack very much like certain high ranking government officials when they are questioned/criticized - i.e. evasion, threats and dark implications - it wouldn't be completely surprising if they also resorted to defamation/libel suits to try to silence those questions.Uncle Monty wrote:What will be more telling is if there will be a libel suit for the Daily.

I am assuming the Cambodia Daily has done it's homework otherwise the article would never have seen print. I could quote from that article to back me up, but given previous issues of Daily stuff being reposted on websites will decline.LTO wrote:Considering that in response to difficult questions the AFESIP spokesperson has taken a tack very much like certain high ranking government officials when they are questioned/criticized - i.e. evasion, threats and dark implications - it wouldn't be completely surprising if they also resorted to defamation/libel suits to try to silence those questions.Uncle Monty wrote:What will be more telling is if there will be a libel suit for the Daily.
My thoughts are as follows;
Libel suit: Prior to publication you hit the courts to stop a story.
Oh well the article is now published and the case goes to court in Cambodia.
a) AFESIP win, well the Cambodian legal system admits all the facts are true. The government looks bad.
b) Cambodia Daily win, well the NGOs have been overstating the case of sex trafficking and lying to get funding. The government looks good.
Option c) Launch a case in a foreign country, maybe not as the comments in front of the UN can be brought up.
My bet, The Daily are sitting on something else.
AFESIP not reacting to the story is the best defence. They hope it is forgotten and goes away
