Specific Medication in Phnom Penh
Greetings All,
I'm travelling to Phnom Penh mid-year and happen to be one of the unfortunate people who are diagnosed with ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder, commonly referred to as ADD). While I can bring my medication from home, the legal requirements that I have a doctor's letter with it and other nonsense, plus the fact that I am stopping through Singapore, really turns me off doing that. Plus I presume that medication is cheaper in PP.
I am wondering if anybody is aware of the availability of 'Dexamphetamine Sulfate' (yes I know what it sounds like but thats what we are prescribed back in West Aussieland believe it or not) or 'Ritalin' (a shitty yank substitute - no offence my cowboy cousins) at pharmacies in PP? And, will I need a prescription?
Regards,

why the hell do you want to 'control' your symptoms?
man cambodia is the perfect place to have a hyperactive frenzy it would be great, i was diagonsed with ADHD when i was 13 but dont like taking drugs because of the side effects, you will be sweet without it, im doing fine, ADHD isnt really at all that debilitating at all just get over it, if you want to relax go to the countryside, otherwise there are some good breathing techniques that will help you calm down,
just go on over and go nuts, you will love it

Pretty nose gives good advice when recommending that self medicating isn't your way out of it. Try some calming breathing techniques.
Going to a new place is always a great chance to start trying a new way of living. Maybe you should go without the meds for the first few weeks and see how you go? You may be cool.
That being said, I'll drop into some pharmacies and let you know if its available and the price.
Is dex or Ritalin on the PBS scheme in Oz (do you know about PBS?) or are you paying full price?
If its on the PBS scheme, would be buying it at a greatly reduced price (the govt subsidise your purchase) which means that you would pay more for it here.
Ive seen heaps of examples of prescription meds back home that are on the PBS scheme that are selling for more than 10 times the price here.

Thanks for the advice guys...
Dr Suess, dex is definately on the PBS and ritalin is according to a government website, which suggests higher prices in your neck of the woods... though a quick check at the next visit to a PP pharmacy from a kind soul such as yourself would be a godsend, as after the whole bali nine/schkank-pelle corby fiasco i'm rather paranoid about being in singapore with medication containing the word 'amphetamine' in its title...even though this stuff certainly aint yama!

Don't you mean dextroamphetamine sulphate? I was under the impression that these stimulants were prescribed to children with said condition, because they had the opposite effect of being a stimulant. I guess I've learned something new.Starving Pelican wrote:

Substances that have increased effect when taken with Dexedrine: Antidepressants such as Norpramin, Meperidine (Demerol), Norepinephrine (Levophed), Phenobarbital, Phenytoin (Dilantin)Ritalin/Dexamphetamines are also prescribed to those on anti-depressant medication, I think to also help stabilise their moods. Or maybe because the anti-depressants affect concentration?
Brand name:
Dexedrine
Pronounced: DEX-eh-dreen
Generic name: Dextroamphetamine sulfate
Side effects may include:
Excessive restlessness, overstimulation
Effects of chronic heavy abuse of Dexedrine may include:
Hyperactivity, irritability, personality changes, schizophrenia-like thoughts and behavior, severe insomnia, severe skin disease
containing the word 'amphetamine' in its title...even though this stuff certainly aint yama!
I think you mean yaba. Yaba is a combination of methamphetamine (a powerful and addictive stimulant) and caffeine.
Desoxyn
Pronounced: des-OK-sin
Generic name: Methamphetamine hydrochloride
Why is Desoxyn prescribed?
Desoxyn is used to treat Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD).
Amphetamine and methamphetamine are very similar drugs. One just has a methyl group. In high enough dosages you could produce the yaba effect with the drug you are taking. I also think even in low dosages over long periods of time it would really mess up your bodies ability to regulate your natural dopamine. If you read the fine print, most of these so called "medications" produce the same symtoms as your trying to alleviate.

Whoops! My apologies.
DEXAMPHETAMINE SULPHATE
Dexamphetamine sulphate BP 5mg/tablet
Presentation
White 8mm normal convex tablets each containing 5mg dexamphetamine sulphate.
Uses
Actions
Dexamphetamine, the dextrorotatory isomer of amphetamine, is an indirect-acting sympathomimetic amine with central stimulant and anorectic activity. It increases motor activity and mental alertness, and diminishes drowsiness and a sense of fatigue.
In children with attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder, dexamphetamine decreases motor restlessness and enhances the ability to pay attention.
Amphetamine facilitates the action of dopamine and norepinephrine by blocking reuptake from the synapse, inhibits the action of monoamine oxidase (MAO), and facilitates the release of catecolamines. It may also stimulate inhibitory autoreceptors in the substantia nigra and ventral tegmentum.

Well, I checked it out for you. I went to 5 major pharmacies here and no one has it.
I went to the biggest and international one also.. the rip off French bastard... who has everything and seems to know all.
He shook his head and said that he did not have it, and I would not get it anywhere in Cambodia. He then made a derogatory remark about me beibng a druggie in Khmer to his wife who was helping me. I felt like delivering the standard "I have ADD and its a medical condition!" spiel, but considering Id already lost eye contact and face and didnt really care I just walked out.
From my experience, he has a great knowledge of what is available here and what isn't, and along with the fact that the other major shops I went to couldnt help, Id say its not available.
Anyway, if it is on PBS, you are much better of getting a supply from Oz and bringing it with you. I went to fill a script I got in Oz that would normally cost around AUS$12 on PBS and over here it cost US$94!!
