It was never an issue for me when I only had to drive from Chroy Changvar to my bar,
But now my house is somewhat far, nearly seventeen kilometres to my bar.
So, after a few sneezing fits, I wear industrial 3M dustmasks with an anitbactrerial and charcoal wigid on the front. Much better.

I tend to sleep in the nude. Which isn't a bad thing except for maybe on those long flights.

The last city I lived in for any length of time before PP was Kathmandu. Not much industry in Nepal and few passenger vehicles at the time; however, the air was choking. For one thing, the city is in a bowl-shaped valley surrounded by mountains with nowhere for air to escape. For another thing, the trucks all used a thick black-smoked noxious combination of low-grade diesel and government-subsidised cooking oil. Where I lived on the outskirts I could sit on my balcony and enjoy unrestricted views of the Himalayas; a mile into town the smog haze was so intense you could see nothing.
The topography of Phnom Penh is quite different; I would expect the river to bring the OP some relief. While the dustmasks are eminently sensible, especially to motobike riders, and soil blowing in from the countryside during the dry season is an issue, I still say that compared to other 3rd world cities it's not that bad. It's all relative; had the OP previously lived in Kathmandu and Calcutta like me, rather than in Japan and Singapore (doubt anyone can hold a hygiene candle to those two nations), he might have a different perspective!

Yeah, Kathmandu is smoggy as hell. It's also got some small rivers running through it that make the stinky canals of Phnom Penh look like paradise, you almost puke from the stink off them. There's one stream in Boudhanath where they cremate people. The stream fucking reeks like a sewer but you get people dipping in it's sacred water.

The noise and pollution of Kathmandu cannot be compared in my opinion, Phnom Penh is pristine by comparison.

After visiting Delhi a fair number of times over the years i have to say that Phnom Penh is a sweet rose smelling valley in the Himalayas in comparison ..
Although with the introduction of LPG in Delhi i have to admit that it's getting better , but the Indian passion for burning all things plastic and rubber needs addressing badly ...
But all in all pollution wise it's one of best Asian city's i've lived in ...
Phnom Penh that is , Delhi is still and ecological nightmare ...

I haven't been in Delhi for about 10 years, but getting stuck in a traffic jam there in a tuk-tuk was a fucking nightmare, serious traffic fumes, along with the other pleasant and extremely unpleasant smells.ribblerat wrote:After visiting Delhi a fair number of times over the years i have to say that Phnom Penh is a sweet rose smelling valley in the Himalayas in comparison ..

Even 20 odd years ago it was unbearable in Delhi. Not only the vehicles belching semi burnt diesel and 2-stroke fuel, but the dust and other acrid particulate; damn near apocalyptic. In Kathmandu, bigger vehicles had just started to become more common place in the narrow streets where previously 2-stroke tuk-tuks and a few cars would race around with badly maintained motors, making one cover their face in some desperate attempt to not inhale the blue/black exhaust spouting from them.
Phnom Penh was nothing like that last time I was there but seems destined to follow other Asian cities from all accounts.

Well the roads were in a hell of a bad state back then. Bangkok used to be much worse but they enforced a lot of measures to reduce the dust, such as covering any piles of sand for construction. That river in Bangkok is worse than any I've seen here though.jm wrote:At the time (2003) measured particulate pollution from generators, stoves, vehicle emissions and suspended road dust was six times higher than Bangkok.
