What is the way of thinking in this country?
Sorry, I'm a cranky pain in the arse I know and I'll probably turn into one of those old codgers that sits in a rocking chair yelling at the TV all day, but why does my neighbor yell at me telling me to stop making so much noise at 2 PM (not AM) because it's "nap time" and then proceed to have karaoke night with his stupid girlfriends til midnight the same day (meaning, 8 PM until now). Is he ignorant beyond retardation or something, seriously, what the F....French fries?
I've lived in several different countries before, but never have I been so confused as to what common courtesy is, or how people think here. Is it just an "I do what I want, screw the rest of you." kind of thinking or what? If that's the case, I'm going to stop worrying about "waking him up" at 2 PM when I want to use my blender and learn how to say "go screw yourself" in Khmer.
By the way, how do you say "go screw yourself" in Khmer?

Those who begin coercive elimination of dissent soon find themselves exterminating dissenters. Compulsory unification of opinion achieves only the unanimity of the graveyard.

In my limited experience trying to understand how Cambodians think is akin to the effects caused by placing your head in a tin bucket and having a group of friends whack said bucket repeatedly with hammers for half an hour.
Actually, "head bucket whacking" will be less traumatic.

At least your neighbour isn't a general with a gun.
A barang was hit by a richochet (there's a national pandemic) whilst sunbathing at Elsewhere after a grumpy general had his nap disrupted.
I may have got some of those details wrong as I cannot find any threads or articles. It happened 3 or 4 yrs ago iirc.

Grumpy neighbors are everywhere in the world, this attitude is not typical Cambodian.

I remember that story. Lady sunbathing by the pool got hit in the foot after said general let loose a few. Never got punished, as usual.ali baba wrote:At least your neighbour isn't a general with a gun.

most might think, as there is so much noise, they dont really care about it...
not true..
asians react extremely sensitive to noise, that is all noise not directed at foreigners or even caused by foreigners...
maybe the karaoke was a result of you making some noise...
could be that the whole matter results from the holidayers, that are naturally seeking some quiet, and so it got sort of "weapon"...

Actually, I would say that the sacredness of the siesta but complete lack of consideration at all other times is quite typical.OSS 117 wrote:Grumpy neighbors are everywhere in the world, this attitude is not typical Cambodian.
Is there a specific "siesta" time over here? Cause I can understand that because it's so hot. Even in southern Japan we get sleepy and go to bed in the afternoon occasionally, but we tend to also acknowledge that the daylight hours are waking hours, so noise such as a food blender is just what happens because you know, people are awake and such.
I don't know, I am easily irritated as well I know, but it my little mind I couldn't understand the reasoning behind, well, anything he said.

Galileo, the Pope and a Cambodian are having a conversation.
Galileo says "The Earth revolves around the Sun".
The Pope says "You're wrong, the Universe revolves around the Earth".
Finally the Cambodian says "You're both wrong, the Universe revolves around me".

No really, but 11AM-2PM is the normal "quiet time". Even some fairly big construction sites have to go quiet between 11-1:30 or so. Part of it is lunch, part of it is avoiding the midday heat, and part of it is siesta time. Angle-grinders will wake you up at 6am on a Saturday morning, but if you let your motorcycle idle for 15 seconds at 1PM they'll freak out because it's "siesta time". C'est la vie. If he's got the karaoke on loud and late at night, feel free to tell him to turn it the fuck down.AK87 wrote:Is there a specific "siesta" time over here?
