Exit Stage Left
Exit Stage Left
So it is official; I can no longer take another minute in this country. Reason: INCESSANT FU##ING NOISE! (capitals intentional). I have moved apartments in PP twice already to find a quiet area near to my work. Then the election bullshit screaming out that looped propaganda rant at ear-splitting levels (under my first floor balcony for 3 solid hours EVERY morning). The fucker in the tuk-tuk just chills out and relaxes while he plays this crap.
My job has me working more hours than I want so I am constantly busy and stressed. There is no such thing as a lie in; constant funerals/ weddings / celebrations of the almost-rising sun with screeching Khmer music for a nice calming and relaxing morning see to that.
Like other posters here I have traveled quite a bit and have never been exposed to this level of insane noise pollution. Even my Khmer neighbours admit the noise gets to them - so it is not just me.
I have no idea why I am writing this now? Maybe just a therapeutic rant... It seems to have worked a bit, so thanks 440 for that.
But seriously though, I'm outta here. Not sure where yet (Alaska seems like a good option right now).
Rant over.

regarding the noise:many feel like you
I have a quiet place now, but I know some dickhead Khmer will fuck it up sooner or later

Wait til the cnut running a junkyard down the road buys three German Shepherd dogs and leaves them in his yard every night.Karong wrote:So it is official; I can no longer take another minute in this country. And the cnut directly across the road demolishes his two-story wooden house because his loan has come through to build an eight-story apartment block. Then you'll have problems.

I've had the soothing sounds of construction happening around me for over a solid year, but am kind of immune to it now. It's only in the daytime and it gives me an excuse to play music at an excessively loud volume. When I was in university I had train tracks that went right behind my house, and after a while didn't even notice when the trains went by. The only exception is when they're using the tile saw or whatever that screeching machine is. That will be the background noise of my version of hell with Gangnam Style playing in the background.

[In fact, if memory serves, Shakespeare's actually direction in A Winter's Tale is "Exit, pursued by a bear" and indicates 'left' separately ]

I live in a quiet enough alley. Shaded too. Depends on where you CHOOSE to live. Vietnam is even worse, and Bangkok? Hahahahahaha...

I've grown an immunity to the noise too. Also good at finding somewhere to live where if it's noisy at the front, I can be in the back where the noise doesn't penetrate.

The condo apartments are insulated from noise, especially if you're on the upper floors. Here in Tuol Kork I hear nothing except happy kids splashing about in the pool - and even then it's because I'm on the floor above it. The neighbouring units are quiet despite full occupancy of mostly Khmers - don't really know why - is it because they are middle class? The section of street outside is always quiet too. You pay a premium for the peace of mind, of course.
I came, I argued, I'm out
I think Cambodia is less noisy than many developing countries I have spent time in. If you need a break, just go back to the
West where neighborhoods are completely devoid of any life in the street and resemble a movie set..............then, you might appreciate Cambodia.
