Emergency! Help Needed
Hi guys, I really would appreciate some help. My missus has been admitted to Calmette hospital, I have managed a short conversation with the only pidgin speaking doctor the brother in-law and sister in-law could get hold of, I know that she is unconscious and on supplemental oxygen. She has been unwell, fever, headache, fatigue and a rash for almost two weeks and just now her sister told me her eyes are yellow. I thought it might be Dengue and said as much to the Doc he reckons no, infection. I don't know what if anything I can do from here, and I just want to know the cereal box Diploma holders at Calmette aren't making anything worse. Any suggestions the only people I know in country are her family and friends of friends who live down in snooky. Any advice or help would be greatly appreciated, thanks guys yours sincerely, Phil (AKA Worried and Anxious)
Intravenous antibiotics if it's an infection, won't do any harm if it's dengue. Lots of water. If you've got cash you might want to move her to Ratannak or SOS but you probably already know that much. Good luck.

Should you send her family money to make sure they have enough cash on hand to promptly pay for any necessary care?

Yeah I had figured as much Bosco, I'm more or less just worried that she is getting the right diagnosis and therefore the right treatment, Doc did say when asked about Dengue that her platelets weren't low and said they were doing cultures so that gave me some confidence, I guess I'm just worried 'cos I can't be there and any information I get is third hand and poorly translated.

A quick online check of all the symptoms you list yielded these...
So maybe hepatitis or glandular fever?
Or even meningitis?

They are good doctors.
Don't call them cereal box diploma doctors if at the same time you are letting your girlfriend there.
If you think it's life threatening, don't take any chance and pay for Ratanak, just like you would do for yourself.

JB117 I was trying for a little levity. Honestly the Doctor I spoke to did seem to know what he was talking about, although he's English wasn't perfect, as I said they had already checked her platelet count and started cultures. It was not my choice to send her to Calmette, I only this morning found out she was in hospital. In the end though it hardly matters as I'm not in country and her sister is the only family member that speaks passable English, so while I can say send her to Ratanak it's up to family who are there on the ground.

If, as your sister-in-law says, she is jaundice, first most likely culprit, especially here in Cambodia, is hepatitis. Doc should be able to confirm/eliminate hep quite quickly with a liver function blood test and a hep screen. He probably already has. Ask to see her liver function numbers. If it is acute hep, in most cases it will pass of its own accord, especially in an otherwise healthy young adult. Not much you can do but follow doctor instructions about diet. Depending on the type of hep, you may want to run a screen on yourself. If it is not hep, then they can start looking for more exotic/less likely culprits.

So you don't want him to take the medical advice you just gave him on the internet?

Thanks guys. LTO I wouldn't really take any internet diagnoses over a Doctors anyway, just looking at stuff for my own comfort (or not) I'm sure you understand when a loved one is sick you want as much info you can get.
I just had a skype call and they let me see her, not good, told the family very forcefully to change her to Ratanak asap, but they wont move her atm, I think because she's in an ICU, I don't know seeing all the tubes coming out of her has shook me up a bit to be honest, after I saw her I just told them I want her in the best hospital right now, money not an issue. They all agreed, but the nurse (I think she was a nurse) said not until morning.
Any way thanks for all the helpful reply's at the very least it's helped me to talk it out, so thanks, really.

If you are in a life threatening situation, the only place in Cambodia is Calmette. It is my understanding that they have the most equipment.
The problem with the doctors, is that they delegate. The best doctors may make the diagnosis but they might not always perform the proceedures, these are done by other doctors, possibly less qualified and experienced.
If you want the best, you need to 'engage' them.
I hope everything works out well.

I don't think people regularly die of hepatitis when it is first noticed, or glandular fever, so the severity of the symptoms sounds strange, to me as a layman, anyway.PJMack wrote:Thanks Will, I never thought of Glandular fever, hepatitis was one that I had thought of hope not though, that is very very bad!
Pay Gavin Scott to analyse copies of the tests, take photos of her yellow eyes etc.,or get her to him.
I had hepatitis as a side result of dengue, I was fine after a few weeks, apart from the chronic recurring insanity, LOL.
Good luck.
