Power has been good for the last 6 months or so. Been going off a lot the last 4 or 5 days though for some reason. I don't swim at Ochhueteal. It is polluted, especially after a rain. The air and temps down here are just so much better than PP. I lived in NorCal and the water never got above 62 & I swam every day March-Nov. I swim almost every day now. The water in SoCal was perfect IMO and I dig body surfing. SHV is boring and there's not a lot of good food. I think I'm going to follow my own advice and live in PP 6 months and SHV for 6.

Yeah, I wish the power/internet out on Koh Rong was more stable... I'd set up my camp there instead. I love the island. Less "filth" all the way around, still great food, and nice quiet beaches.
But at least staying in s'ville through the week it means the island is perfect and easy on weekends.

I assume if you don't drop dead suddenly there is transport from SHNV to PP and then onwards.
Go fuck yourself......thanks in advance.
Wacky...Thats some statement ..".there is not a lot of good food "..
I do most of my own cooking (amateur trained cook) when I go out I dont like to have boring meals...
and generally go for dishes that I dont cook myself or that are complicated.
"Restaurants, Nyam, Grand Kampuchea, Coolabah, Queenco Resort, Happa, Ku Kai, M'lop Mean, Cabbage
Garden",
These are the ones that Casper recommended, I have eaten in all of them,I have had exceptional meals in
Coolabah,QueenCo, and Ku Kai....then there are the out of town restaurants, Pagoda Rocks, Malis,
Lemongrass, Paradise Island, Hengs etc .....there is plenty of good food in Sihanoukville ! .
If you cook yourself the Seafood available is fantastic...the main staples, crab claws ($6 a kilo) and prawns
($3-$8 a kilo) to make a Mediterranean Seafood Chowder keep me happy...

Someone nailed it. Sville is boring. End of.OK for stoners and holidaymakers but nothing in terms of jobs, cultural activities etc. Too small and a high concentration of people on the lam. At least in PP one can avoid the riverfront where most scammers and beggars reside and still have a decent meal. Seville has no option but to avoid the beaches or leave town. And if you avoid the beach there's no real reason to stay there.

I was in the restaurant biz virtually my whole life and I ended up owning a couple in San Francisco. I cook 5 nights/week. I've eaten at just about all of those you listed too - meh ! They're all OK, but that's it, IMO. Gran Kampuchea's food is good but the waiters there are completely brain dead. Used to like Malis, but the last 3 meals there have been just OK. Marco Polo is consistently decent as is the Black Grouper. One can get a good meal in town, but the over all quality is dreadful. I've had more bad meals here than any place else. I think most places treat food as just something to prevent the dry heaves when drinking.Dacah wrote:Wacky...Thats some statement ..".there is not a lot of good food "..
Now Dacah is the man to talk to........
I haven't mentioned my own bar, however, I've had the pleasure of meeting quite a few members of this forum here. They've drank, they've eaten and we've chatted, nice guys. They've left and later gave compliments on a number of Cambodia related websites / forum. Never here though ...... I won't embarrass them by mentioning their names.
Casper...THANKS for a great list of places to visit in old Kompong Som. Bring the wife to have a look see and not a clue (until now) as to where to go... WHAT is the name of your place ?? Would like to drop by...

Wow! Tough crowd at the old chat forum..... So much hostility over, "PP or S-Ville long term?"..
Some good info interspersed amongst the FU's... Trying to convince the wife to move to KR (or agree to me acquring a khmer wife who will) so the discussion is of interest. Generally I gather most of what there is to do in Cambodia involves going to & coming from drinking/toking or avoiding those that do... sounds pretty much as I remember it except for the occasional rocket dropping into town (1973) which no one will miss.... Just my .02 cents.
One day more, One day less TonyD

A few have already said, that there are places that are wonderful beach locations offering decent service and great good, and no scammers / beggars.Just Robbed wrote:Someone nailed it. Yes, if you 'need' to work, then employment options are limited in Sihanoukville, that's why most of the people here are retired. If you were retired yourself, how would you fill your day in Phnom Penh?
"Cultural Activities" Ha, this one makes me laugh ......... come on then, tell us how long you spend on "Cultural Activities" each month

yeah, this one's got me wondering as well. once you've toured a few slums, seen the palace/wats, etc... what's really left?casper_uk wrote: "Cultural Activities" Ha, this one makes me laugh ......... come on then, tell us how long you spend on "Cultural Activities" each month
bars, markets, restaurants...?
you can start a hobby/join a sport... but i'd imagine there's hobbies and sport to be had in s'ville as well.

There's an art exhibition tomorrow night in PP at Tamarind that some may be interested in attending. Going to the likes of Meta House or the cinema to see The Smurfs would also be considered a cultural activity. You guys crack me up. So one track minded. If it don't involve booze or pussy seems it's not on your radar.
Yes I like going to Meta , Smurfs however would not be for me.....Just Robbed wrote:There's an art exhibition tomorrow night in PP at Tamarind that some may be interested in attending. Not all retirees here are "one track minded", in fact in my own circle, they are very settled
with long term g/fs or wives....as for booze, I am not a big drinker and rarely go to the bars
being a bit of a foodie I spend a lot of time seeking out stuff I dont have a clue about...I miss
Sun San ...he was great on the local cuisine ...I have found like minded people here in SNV.
I am never bored here, I love the beaches and I like architecture, when I came here first I helped
out with the Van Molyvann Project and you can find many examples of New Khmer Architecture
in and around SNV...St Michael s catholic church being an outstanding example of Molyvanns work..
If you scout around you can find amazing things here...original wooden pounding of the rice noodles ?
The fishing villages bring in fascinating catches, that you have to be there to see...the boat building
in both the Port area and Strung Vu are amazing to see...if your bored in SNV I think it has more to
do with you rather than the town itself...

i convinced my wife that i find dark skin attractive and now the "i don't want my skin to get dark" nonsense has pretty much faded fully away. being attractive to their S.O. means more to them...
OrangeDragon wrote:
Has she given up the expensive shiseido fade cream and tossed the bottle in the trash (or given it to the beggar lady outside)?
Or does she just put the stuff on when you're not around?
Hard to fight a entire cultural mentality - white skin good, dark skin bad.
Any resemblance to a sensible comment is just an illusion.
Don't worry, be happy.
