Has anything like this ever happened to you in Phnom Penh?OrangeDragon wrote:Case in point of doing stupid shit... in the pitch black between two beach bars tonight while drunk I pulled out my phone to find out what time it was and try to see where beerbaron went... the result, someone popped out of the dark and snatched it out of my hand. Chased but I lost them in the fog machine and crowd of the bar they ran into.

he took me to an atm to get khmer money since he didn't have change and when i came out took me into an alley where he had 4 friends waiting. got a couple of ribs kicked in and hit for $70 and a phone.
you're all now going to also get a review of the medical system here... jumping out of a boat i hit the sand wrong and am pretty sure i've broken my heel/arch. not my fucking week. did catch some beautiful (but small) fish.

I can't wait for the first book in the series: "Phnom Penh: mugged by a tuk tuk driver" co-written by Cambod and OD
Followed by the sequel "Sihanoukville: the phantom phone thief and that crazy lady"
I can't wait to hear about all the zany adventures that you will get up to in Siem Reap!!

That's some bad luck you've had there OD, may I humbly suggest that you retire earlier in the evenings?

So, result is a ruptured ligament... decent enough doctors for shit like broken bones (they knew how to do and read an x-ray...) who spoke marginally decent english. you have to be clear that there will be zero chinese medicine... otherwise they will want to prescribe you leapord testicle tea or some shit, and then they finally cave and give you western stuff. first stop was the new (ish) international clinic they opened here, very nice inside but the bone doctor (russian) had gone home... so rather than call her in we went to the one on ekereach with the 24 hour emergency entrance. set me up with some crutches, told me to stay off of it, gave me an antibiotic and an anti-inflammatory. $60 including the crutches... not horrible.
probably wouldn't want to go there for a heart transplant... but for everyday injuries it wasn't too bad. very friendly staff all around as well.

honestly i probably have... but didn't know him. i made myself very much the victim in this case doing what i knew better than to do in several ways. i was so drunk he could be hanging out at my house and i wouldn't know him. the beating i got was earned by me being stupid enough to try and take a swing at them once i figured out what was going on... when a) great way to get dead instead of robbed, and b) i was seeing doubles and could hardly even stand up. i think the dollar amount shows how much relative luxury we live in here... considering that could easily be a week or more of work for him and it would be something we blow on a moderately heavy night of drinking. sort of puts a little perspective on things.LexusSchmexus wrote:Hahahahahha. Try the Raksmey Clinic, they have Vietnamese doctors.
And don't go around PP with more than 30$ in your pocket.

in general, a good way to keep me from spending it. in practice, i have been here for almost a year and a half and almost never go out with so little cash on me... and have never been relieved of it other than the one time that i both made it VERY obvious and made myself a VERY obvious victim in waiting.AmericanYuon wrote: And don't go around PP with more than 30$ in your pocket.

Unless you pay 3-5$ for a drink 30$ will go a long way in PP.
If your typical night out includes a 20$ dinner and 5-10$ for tuktuk/taxi or a Martini hooker of course you need a bit more.

my typical night out starts around 8pm and ends around 5am... and includes a tuk ride home, dinner, late night snack (katy perry pizza usually), a tuk/moto ride between different bar areas, maybe a round of drinks for my friends, etc. i'd burn through $30 by 11.
