Annoying/disturbing national habits
Having been inspired by GM's question about the lack of walkers in KoW. I particularly find the national pastime of zit popping in public pretty damn disgusting.
Got me to wondering what annoys or disturbs people about accepted behaviour from other cultures/countries?
Khmer: Public displays of zit popping
Chinese: Hacking up lurgies
Americans: Once gathered into a group voice levels can exceed 200dB even though they are standing next to each other
Kiwis: reply to a question with "yeah nah"

The Viets I know do the zit popping thing too. Drives me nuts, especially when they're using my motorcycle mirrors.
Khmer. Buy something, open wrapper, throw on ground. Gets me every time.

Chinese: aren't alone in that adorable pastime unfortunately

Picking through hair for head-lice in public is pretty strange. Where I'm from having head-lice is not exactly something you'd want anyone to know about.

I always thought the leaving tissues on the floor thing was deliberate symbolic piece of self-promotion. It shows other customers how popular the restaurant is and it certainly seemed like some competitive thing between two rather popular eating houses in my street. At the end of the night they'd sweep the tissues out at around the same time each night and stand there admiringly at the size of their mound...Rama wrote:Khmer:

Khmer eating with open mouth while making disgusting noises with food hanging out on the side of the mouth - saw a pretty Khmer (suv driving) lady with her family doing it in a nice restaurant. Needless to say that all her prettiness faded away along with my appetite.
Also staring - took me awhile to get over the fact that they stare at you forever and don't look away even if you give them a stare back.

It'd wouldn't bother you if you've done time in India - they're the worst for disgusting noises, smoking, hacking their throats out and pissing in the street.ruralrage wrote:I've had to give up eating at local Cambodian restaurants with really good food and have them put it in a doggy bag. I came, I argued, I'm out

There is a sound they make (normally after eating) where they pierce their lipps together. Actually they will do this over an over again even after the drink or meal is long gone... sounds like a rare bird chirping.
1) Tooting your horn even when there is nobody in front of you on the road
2) Piercing Sound
3) Blaring of Music (even 85 year olds at funerals sit ear to speaker and just stare blankly)
4) Throwing trash on the ground
5) Saying "Hellow" over and over again when they call you, especially when its obvious you cannot speak their language... "Hello? Hello? Hello!"

The pretty woman chewing with open mouth thing drives me nuts...when I see it, their face fades from view and a superimposed cow head chewing cud replaces it.../shudder

You are all a bunch of whingers. Though I do admit the thing with seeing a real cutie and then she starts eating does, no not really annoy me, nut makes me feel it is such a waste.
Incidentally, I hope you do know that the Chinese regard many things done by Westerners as absolutely disgusting? For example rubbing the sleep out of tour eyes? Or the Yank favorite, putting your feet on a table?
