Is USD$800 enough?
Hello. I'm thinking of spending some time in Phnom Penh. I have some money saved up and my budget is USD$800 per month. Now factoring in rent, utilities, food, etc., will that be enough to live on? I'm not looking to live a lavish lifestyle. Any comments and suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Billy

So long as your piece of string is short.BURLESQUE@SDHHOTEL wrote:Yes.

Yes.
Go out first few nights, riverside, Wat Langka, gradually start getting more drunk and going to look, just look, at whores on St 136, 104, 51. Take one home on day four, negotiate the price first, I'd offer $150 for a wank(doesn't matter, you'll see) then wake up with fuck all in your pockets/room/wallet/balls. Chalk it down to experience then stop doing all of that shit and behave as if you like yourself, then you will come to see that $800 is loads to live on in sunny PP.
In summary $800 for the first week(mostly stolen) then $800 a month thereafter. Piece of piss!
Hope this helps!
Seriously, although most of that was, easy with $800 mate. You can have a 2 bed apt fully furnished for $250. A smaller, self contained room for $100, Getting around is cheap enough, even eating 'expensive' western crap is not that expensive. Eat for $200 month. Piss up $50 a weekend, travel/arse around with balance during the week.
I donated around $800 a month to unfortunate girls here in the first few months, they were only actually unfortunate in that they had to wait near me until I was so drunk I would pass out and relinquish my goodies. If you behave a little better than me, you will have less problems than I did. Bloody good fun at the time tho' what?
I did not win a prize, or the respect of my peers for my grotesque behaviour. Arsed!

- You will not have a lavish lifestyle.
- February will be the easiest as there are only 28 days.

You should get back here mate (or at least if it turns out you have lost your kids) - $1600 per month will be fine. Half that, not so fine.

yeah, we burn through about 1500-1600 a month, but are also doing lots of eating out and trips/etc all the time.andyinasia wrote:You should get back here mate (or at least if it turns out you have lost your kids) - $1600 per month will be fine. Half that, not so fine.

$200 per month for rent and uti8lities if you shop around or share.
$25 per month for visa cost
$100 per month for food at home or some local meals.
$15 per month for petrol for your $400 moto
$15 per day for spending money. ($450 per month)
$10 per month for Laundry.
Your $15 per day can buy you a meal and 4 pitchers of beer (4.5 litres) at the Golden Soyra Mall.
It can buy you a short time bit of company (so I am told).
You could spend 6 hours at the Walkabout playing pool with the working girls and have about 8 beers and a chicken baguette.
You can still have up to 8 beers plus tip at the Garage bar, or 6 beers plus a hotdog.
You can have a great feed of ribs at the LoneStar and enough for at least 6 Zorok beers there, plus leave a tip.
You could buy about 3 700ml bottles of cheap Vodka or Gin for drinking at home.
For a 4 day break, you can get a R/T bus ticket to SHV, $8 incl moto to the beach and have a quiet day on the trip down and back.
Lie on the beach, eat a $3 BBQ feed, drink 15 50 or 75 cent beers and stay in a $6 budget room close to the beach each day for a couple of days.
You could go to Quealeys bar and have a dozen beers and a cheap bite to eat for that money as well.
You will need to buy a cheap moto, otherwise the moto fares will eat significantly into your budget.
Have a couple of nights in and/or just go out for a few beers on a couple of nights and you can have some decent nights out.
If you are silly enough to drink with Lord Playboy, you will blow your monthly budget in a week.
It is not the most extravagant life on $800 pm, but I will warrant you will have a better quality of life than living on 3 times that amount back home.
I know people who have lived on way less and others that live on close to that amount.

yeah... we don't use busses... or shared taxis. about $100 round trip most times... though sometimes we just rent a car ($45) for a day trip. now we've bought a decent car that should go down a lot, but will probably go up in fuel costs as we'll be more inclined to take trips, lol.BirdBrain wrote:Well when I lived in PP before I guess a large portion of my income was spent on food but since I had a gastric sleeve performed a year ago I rarely eat so massive saving. Trips aren't generally that expensive. Can always get a decent room for $20 and a bus ticket costs $5 or $6 to just about anywhere in the country. Taxi's for a few dollars more. I guess rent has gone up. Last time I rented in PP was 2006 and paid $120/month but currently now paying $1200/month in Aus.OrangeDragon wrote: yeah, we burn through about 1500-1600 a month, but are also doing lots of eating out and trips/etc all the time.

No. $800 a week is subsistence living, at best just for beer.ricecakes wrote:$1000 completely fine if no car, no kids and no bad habits.
