Marketing in Cambodia
Surely the only effective advertising here has to include incredibly loud music or be on a huge billboard that may fall down in a squall.
Certainly in the past cambodians didnt believe in advertising but now they seem to embrace boards like bong thom and 24.
It is an industry on the up and up of course, khmers will eventually be just as brain washed as us.

Because people here have absolutely no taste. And because good creatives are a scarce commodity.
not really read the thread, just ...
from a western culture, you will NEVER IN A MILLION YEARS get a foot into the market here...
not in marketing, not in restaurants or whatever - as far as it concerns the locals...
ppl are VERY VERY different... the asian and western "cultures" couldnt be more different, because the ppl are so different...
we are enormously, unbelievably even, different...
you will never like their taste and they not yours...
they will never understand you and you not them...
not in marketing, not in advertising and not in food, furniture design, fashion design or whatever...

I'm afraid you are so so wrong. My wife is brand manager of a major European chain and is bringing European style and taste to Cambodia. It's going very well. Cambodians are not troglodytes - they are exposed to and open to other cultures.
I came, I argued, I'm out

Utter nonsense. If Asian and western tastes are so different, how do you explain BurgerKing being full every day? How do you explain the proliferation of expensive western cafes charging $4 for a coffee, with most of them being equally populated by Khmers and foreigners? How do you explain the availability of $150 pairs of Adidas trainers for sale on Sihanouk, girls aspiring to shop in Mango across the road?
I'm sorry, but you don't know what you're talking about. Khmers - and other Asians - aren't a different species. They have the same aspirational goals as the rest of us, and this is something western marketers understand very well.
your newbie to asia, scobienz...
its normal, that you think that... but its dead wrong...

I've lived in Asia for the last ten years. During that time - and for the last twenty years - I've always worked in marketing. Most of the time I've worked in Asia, I've worked as a Marketing Director (including here in Cambodia where I am Head of Marketing for Asia).
Oh, and I used to be an Account Director in an advertising agency also - in Asia.
But, yeah, you could be right. You probably know more about it than I do.

I think Potty was outed as a troll a few months back.
I'm starting to remember why that was.

im not in the upper floors, im on the street...
i have been on the streets (of asia) already some 20 years ago - on and off...
imo, the cultures are EXTREMELY different... in taste, in style, goals (long/short term) and whatever else... and they STAY(ed) that..
they are DIFFERENT from its CORE... from their lifestyle, their values, the above mentioned, the before mentioned, and even many things more...
while (we) different cultures have quite a lot in common, we share EXTREMELY little with the asian one - when comparing typical american/european cultures to e.g. middle eastern, south americas...
just my experience...
(for the record: im NOT saying, one is better, more advanced or anything like that)
