I'm indeed a qualified engineer, although I've retired from that profession. Now I'm an entrepreneur, and yes, we don't "vet" our clients to stringent standards to ensure they're morally or ethically qualified for us to provide our services. To do so would take more time than it would to do the work, and would result in the collapse of the enterprise. If that's what you qualify as selling out, then we, as every other business in Cambodia and in the world, are sellouts. We will not, however, participate in the bribery, kickback or cartel business or work with clients whom we know for certain are dispossessing people illegally etc. I think that's about all you can do.vladimir wrote:JC, you're a qualified engineer iirc, in your field perhaps every appointment is merit-based, but we are talking Cambodian TEFLers here.
gavinmac, as usual you are generalising, puerile attempt.
But working for people you claim to despise, that you have criticised for human rights abuses, property theft, and myriad of other crimes, yup, that might qualify as greedy selling out. What do you think?
I'm not saying it's always a greedy sell out. I'm discussing how it happened. I'm not saying people can't do the work (although often they can't), I'm talking about how they got in.
And with TEFLers, trust me, it's usually networking playing a very significant role.
Narcissists may sleep better thinking otherwise, because Dog forbid their view of themselves is not based on truth.
Enjoy, Fanboys!
Networking is a necessary part of anyone's career success in my experience, TEFLer or not. However, it can only get you so far, at the end of the day, you have to produce results or you'll be back to square one. Personality is similarly an important part, as are even such mundane things as personal hygiene and dress. To claim it's all about networking is naive IMO.

+1. Especially the part about personal hygiene. After I started brushing my teeth, the offers flowed in.Jacked Camry wrote:I'm indeed a qualified engineer, although I've retired from that profession. That's the sound of my post going waaaay over your head. Sorry, but it was funny you thought I was having a go at you.Apologies if I gave you that impression. I rate you as one of the smarter people on here, and generally you are fair, so no need for that. We both share similar views politically and wrt things such as racism.
It was not in any way directed at you or your profession. And I agree that that is all you can do.
The appointments include a mix of luck and ability. Getting that interview/ making that connection is the luck factor. I'm certain people who have been here a long time, involved in the teaching industry (TEFL) will tell you of stories of how they were offered jobs.
I know of one guy who met his future employer in a brothel in Kampot, but names are not necessary, but it isn't a Mickey Mouse school...
@SP: I suspect the interview path for TEFLers and qualified lawyers may be slightly different...

Ah, I see. This is all about vlad trying to have a dig at me. Vlad, you know fuck all about me and about my work, but nevermind, ignorant bigotry trumps all in your envious little mind, doesn't it? If you actually knew what I've been doing this past year you'd probably be quite proud of me, but far be it from me to burst your bubble; keep up the outdated delusions - it seems to be the only thing that gets you through the night.
And no, I'm not going to reveal anything about what I'm actually doing, so carry on enjoying the puerile digs.

dandy, no you don't see.
I was having a dig at people in TEFLing in general who rage about certain things/people in Cambodia one minute and take the cash the next, but if either your or JC want to wear the that says I meant you, you go right ahead.
I'm not averse to mentioning your name when I want to dig at you, you know that - I don't know how, maybe you pay someone, because I'm on ignore
Hey, I thought I was on ignore? You liar! How many times is that now?

How about banning or suspending your buddies when they out people? Isn't that in the (selective) rules?
Corruption? Me? Never, I make way too much money...oh, wait...

There's some really sad stuff being posted on this thread, in amongst some really good stuff (as per usual with many threads on this forum).
Vlad, isn't it time your feud with Aia was consigned to the dustbin? I've had my run-ins with him, but I like to think they have been conducted with dignity and fairly short-lived.
You have got form for being quite nasty on this forum - remember the thread you started about me when I was KingLear entitled 'A fart'? You often take umbrage at people (posters) and then start a thread about them so that you can lambast them. So what if people have a go at you? I've had plenty of that in the past and it can be quite upsetting, but you have to move on.
Let's all have a beer and move on!

I hear you. I could name 100+ expats I know here as well, and I don't think even 10 of them are involved in teaching whatsoever!horace wrote:Really, I know by name and face more than 100 expats (white, western, male and female) and only about 25 of these are teachers of any description.
Where are these mass groupings of ESL teachers in Phnom Penh? Every expat I know here runs a bar, restaurant, hotel, etc., or is involved with construction or agri programs in the provinces, or is in finance, or like many, has a web-based business, etc.

You've answered two threads in one - you've also just demonstrated the only difference between Aussies and the English.Starving Pelican wrote:+1. Especially the part about personal hygiene. After I started brushing my teeth, the offers flowed in.

I'm not going to respond by insulting you, but the list is very long, and your hypocrisy and opportunism...
