La Patate
Yea that guy is a big boy. Never ate there but used to frequent Bodega (across the street) which I believe had the same ownership. Bodega seems to have closed which is unfortunate. Not sure what happened.
Taxi, we'd rather walk. Huddle a doorway with the rain dogs The Rum pours strong and thin. Beat out the dustman with the Rain Dogs; Oh, how we danced and you Whispered to me ... You'll never be going back home

He's more than a bit tubby. He's practically spherical.scobienz wrote:I heard a rumour the other day that the owner - described to me as 'a tubby Belgian' - hasn't been seen for a while. The source was worried because he was always a fixture in the place. I've only been once. I was underwhelmed.

Last time I saw him he was using walking sticks to get around.
Sorry to hear Bodega closed.

There's a review on the front page from 2008 and at that time the food was very good indeed.

Back then the chef was a much older largish French chap called Yves and he could certainly cook.

Service is also great at La Patate. Good prices I find, but the subs can be a bit underwhelming taste-wise. Still amazing value and they still have the best fries in town by a country mile. Bodega was jointly owned by him and a musician until they split. Not sure who were the last owners (did notice a western lady as manager) and yeah, sadly it closed. Bodega's food was really good, but the prices were likely too high for its own good. I also liked what they had done with the interior, it was a bit different.

Anyway, good review. But there's no way on this planet I could eat half a chicken at a sitting. I buy a half chicken from a local (Pattaya) vendor and it's good for three meals.

I am not sure of the current ownership structure, but in 2008 I had a Khmer friend who was a waitress there, and I ate there often. She liked the foreign owner, but quit because she said the Khmer partner frequently hit the staff. I have never eaten there again due to this.James Bong wrote:Have never seen any local partner there.

Sounds like the owner of Shanghai bar.
Friend of mine will never go back because he said he used to abuse the staff.
It was before my time so i respect his decision, but i go there occasionally regardless. but i have made a point not to get to know the owner.
I would imagine many khmer owners would abuse their staff in some form or another... considering the alcohol fuelled violence in the homes in this country.
I make a point not to go to Riverside anymore after witnessing Andy's alcohol induced rants and threats to staff back in 2009 during the day! How anyone could work there is beyond me.. but i guess here the workers are just happy to have a job and will put up with a lot of shit.
Also the hostess bar bosses that cut their staff's wages 10 bucks a day if they dont turn up to work ie sick etc.... that is a low act.

Over the years that I have walked past the place, on several occasions I have heard and seen him abusing shit out of his staff. It's a wonder anyone will work for him. Even my only encounter with him ended up with him accusing me of knocking over of his sign as I walked past it.

It will be a shame if he's gone and that place closes. Phnom Penh used to have more "characters" per square mile than any other place on earth.
It will probably be taken over by two posh Kiwi's. Before you know it we'll all be sat in bars with no name, eating tapas and drinking cocktails out of jam jars.
