When two men sit in the back of a tuk tuk
When two (heterosexual) men are riding as passengers in a tuk tuk, they should always sit across from each other, right? Someone has to ride backwards, don't they? Otherwise it's like sitting next to a man in a romantic hansom cab ride or something.
Today I saw a tuk tuk go by with a middle aged white man and a younger Khmer guy sitting in it. They were sitting next to each other. I immediately assumed they were gay. Not that there's anything wrong with that.
I would probably sit right next to another man at a movie theater before sitting next to him in a tuk tuk.

This whole male-fear-of-appearing-gay is an interesting new phenomenon. Looking at 50-150-year-old photos of a bunch of men (2 or more) they'll often be close together, arm-on-shoulder or some such. Men used to be a lot closer without having to reassure themselves and the rest of the world "no homo" regularly.
Well I can't directly comment on your tuk-tuk scenario but it's just an interesting train of thought that your post reminded me of.. probably the white guy entered first and the Khmer didn't think anything of sitting next to him, perhaps considering it a natural expression of friendliness and "male closeness" (no not homo-erotical)... but I'm speculating as much as you here

Isn't that the thing that usually yields drooling injury-prone sucklings, nagging wives, demanding mothers-in-law, sick buffalos, insurance/mortgage/tax/etc obligations and gout? Postponed for now.Steve Zodiac wrote:Get a life numb nuts.

That's an insightful comment, thanks. I hadn't considered that. Foreigners don't have same personal space issues as Westerners, obviously. Twice I've been on flights sitting in an aisle seat, with a foreign dude sitting next to me in the middle seat for the whole flight even though the window seat was open. I didn't think they were gay, I just thought it was a cultural thing. Maybe one of the guys didn't know he could move over to the window; the second guy actually moved from the window to the middle next to me because he was working in his laptop and the person in front of him reclined.metaleap wrote:

But yes, each time I spent the entire flight obsessing over the fact that the dude next to me wasn't moving over to the window.

Not to endorse the website itself as a whole (not really my kind of schtick), but this is a cool article (mostly old photos) showing how "western" men used to be quite similar in the past:

The poses, facial expressions, and body language of the men below will strike the modern viewer as very gay indeed. But it is crucial to understand that you cannot view these photographs through the prism of our modern culture and current conception of homosexuality.

Those photos are interesting. I've seen guys in Muslim countries doing that but didn't know that Western men did it 100 years ago.metaleap wrote:Not to endorse the website itself as a whole (not really my kind of schtick), but this is a cool article (mostly old photos) showing how "western" men used to be quite similar in the past:

You're over-thinking this, gavinmac.
I've seen male, Caucasian, young, athletic backpackers sitting next to each other in tuk-tuk, I never thought "Oh must be gay."
I just thought "Oh 2 male, Caucasian, young, athletic Apollos sitting in a tuk-tuk"
I really liked looking at the photos at your link, metaleap. I enjoyed the candor of those men. Nowadays people are so self-conscious and need to control and project a certain image of themselves.

Would never have even crossed my mind! Wouldn't sitting opposite and staring into each others eyes be more cosygavinmac wrote:When two (heterosexual) men are riding as passengers in a tuk tuk, they should always sit across from each other, right? Depends, some yes but social mores can be highly variablegavinmac wrote: Foreigners don't have same personal space issues as Westerners, obviously.
I was once in a large empty restaurant in India and was gobsmacked when a family of 6-7 people squeezed into the same booth as me. Later on having seen more of normal Indian living conditions and differences in the idea of "personal space" it made sense

Long time ago for my first time in SEA, after landing in Don Muang airport, hangovered, jet lagged, with an exploded shaving cream can filling my bag, my "experienced" friend had us save a few baths and take the local non air con buses to the city center rather than a taxi.
The trip involved different bus lines with some walking. As we were totally lost some middle aged local man helped us and took my hand in his to walk me 500 meters to the next bus stop. That felt of course very awkward.
Such intimate contact with no gay intentions whatsoever was a real shocker and the best lesson ever as for trying not to see things through a western prism.

But three blokes all squeezed tightly on a small motor bike is common...tarariverboat wrote:yer i never through about it as that way.i always will sit next to a guy or girl in a tuk tuk facing the right way.i am a bit surprised anyone would think differently.i mean do we go through life thinking (is this a gay moment?)

In all seriousness, you might be gay.gavinmac wrote:Today I saw a tuk tuk go by with a middle aged white man and a younger Khmer guy sitting in it. They were sitting next to each other. I immediately assumed they were gay.
If so, just accept it.
wtf would anyone care if they were gay or straight or transgendered hobbits?
