I've avoided the things for near 20 years now, but am bringing the manager of my Chinese team over for a holiday and will really have to take her (to the temples).
I can't face the main area with Chinese and Koreans taking two finger photos all over them, following a prat in a hat with a flag in the air.
Somebody here wrote about a couple of really nice temple areas which are still pretty quiet and about an hour out of town or something but I can't find the post - don't even mind if they are further. Where they at/how to get there/what are they called?
(Frankly, the canal system interests me more. Is there a good way to get an idea of what this was all about, again without the prat in the hat with the flag dogging your every step with a hundred dutiful Chinese and or Koreans following along behind him?)
Thanks.

May I suggest the guy I have used since 2009 - Samithy 012 89 31 81 - Email [email protected]
Each time we visit SR, he "finds" a "new" temple we have not visited. Not being rude, but after a while, temples all look the same.
But, he did take us to Beng Melea, a bit out of SR. It is in ruin and will stay that way. This temples claim to fame was that it was one of the temples used in The Tomb Raider, the tiger walking on the fallen log. The log is still there, but slowly rotting away.
Talk with the guy and let him give you some suggestions.
He does like to have some amber fluid in a responsible way and take you to local restaurants, as apart from your normal tourist traps.
Regards

Thanks for the advice so far.
So away from the main patch, which would be the best spot to go just for one day do you think?
I'll try both of the recommended peeps above too.

I think Beng Melea is the answer. Banteay Srey is nice enough too, it's just a bit outside the main complex, it may be on the way to Beng Melea.

The Roulous group is usually fairly quiet, Beng Melea is a bit further on the way, but sadly now the road is good coaches & buses can get there & you need a separate ticket ($5 I think from the ticket booth on the way).
Much appreciated, folks.
I think Beng Mealea it is with perhaps a stop at the Rolous group on the way back (if I've got the geography right) if there's time.

Seems unlikely that she'll want to go to the temples but be happy to skip all of the better known ones. The nice thing about the main complex is that you can see several temples in a few hours and then call it quits. Check out the Canby Guide, they have a good section on the temples if you're really determined to do this.

That's a very good point actually. It's a Western cultural thing to want to 'go off the beaten track' and avoid the mobs. Asians, and Chinese in particular, follow the herd - through choice rather than coercion. It might be a good idea to ask her what her preference is before you inadvertently find yourself imposing your white man's agenda on her.giblet wrote:Seems unlikely that she'll want to go to the temples but be happy to skip all of the better known ones. Take her to see a Chinese movie, then a Chinese meal in a Chinese restaurant, then a Chinese show and book her into a Chinese hotel. From what I've heard about Chinese tourists in the main they prefer Chinese things.
Leave the Temples till rainy season.
