Why do so many on this forum defend Cambodia?
Bro, if you think western menus are overpriced in Cambodia, you should either....
1. Pull your head out of your tight arse hole before you suffocate.
2. Fuckoffski somewhere else.
Locals can't offer the same food cheaper and put 'price gouging' westerners out of business because....
1. The locals don't know what a good western style meal tastes like.
2. The westerners are going out of business without their help due to higher rents and cheap arse tourists.
Of course ingredients for western food cost more because.....
1. They often use imported ingredients like butter, mustard, bacon, hams, god the list could be so long I'm not going to bother more than that.
2. They have larger protein portions than Asian food.

Some men you just can't reach. So you get what we had here last week, which is the way he wants it... well, he gets it. I don't like it any more than you men.

Locals attempt to make western food all the time, but it rarely tastes as good as when a westerner or properly trained Khmer does it. This is the same way westerners rarely make Cambodian dishes as well as Khmer make them. They're different styles of cooking and each takes time to get used to.
Some western ingredients, especially dairy products, do cost quite a bit more. Not sure why you seriously doubt this.

No, you look at the situation from the perspective of a low budget tourist and the locals that you interact with are generally the sort that interact mostly with this demographic. For example the drug pushers and pimps who hang around backpacker hostels and purport to be moto dops. The low budget tourist interacts with these, then assumes that all Khmers are like this. Back in the '90's I had a house on lakeside before it became a backpacker ghetto. As things changed and more backpackers headed lakeside, many of my neighbors would ask why these backpackers were so rude and dirty. Why do they bicker about prices and get angry over a few riel when they have the money to fly half way across the world to holiday in Cambodia. Of course the locals having to deal with this demographic eventually became fed up with their behaviour and reacted accordingly. Myself and a few other neighbors moved out the rest adapted to the situation by selling sex, drugs and banana pancakes.Cheap Backpacker wrote: Maybe since I'm not an expat and don't want to live in Cambodia I can look at the situation in Cambodia from a more neutral perspective.
Alternatively if you come here to work you are more likely to come into contact with a better demographic and the people serving this demographic are usually more polite as they see you as possible long term customers. Hence the expats living in this environment become defensive when some budget tourist starts generalising about Khmers from a perspective alien to their everyday experience. Of course they are aware of "bad element" Khmers but reading about this becomes tedious, and in any event these elements are easily avoided.

Maybe move your ass away from the riverside and look in other places and maybe, just maybe, you'll be able to have another experience?Cheap Backpacker wrote: Why can't the people just simply say, "they have us by the balls" because there is not enough competition? Why defend Cambodia and not just say how it is, they are ripping foreigners off because they can get away with it. Or possibly just admit the truth, Cambodians can give a shit about foreigners and they don't really like you and just want your money. At least in the Thailand forum people there are more honest about the locals and not trying to defend them like they do on this forum.
And to be honest, and I'm not Cambodian, from what I read from you so far I don't think I really like you too, but I don't need your money. Many Cambodians, unfortunately, do.
Well thank the gods there is cheap backpacker to point out what a crappy place Cambodia is. I would never have guessed that some people in Cambodia are unique in world for cheating tourists.
That ex-rugby player taxi driver in Darwin, NT who took me in the complete opposite direction from my hotel after he fetched me from the airport and then short-changed me looked pretty damn white and Aussie to me, but must have been Cambodian.
That McDonald's employee in Miami looked and talked like a black American when she short changed me, but no, another Cambodian.
That twit near Notre Dame in Paris selling the knock-off watches...another Cambodian.
That guy in Athens who swears his brother is from the same town as I and who wanted me to go to a "random" bar to buy me a drink? Cambodian.
That guy in the suit with great English just inside the entrance to Cairo's pyramids telling me I must have a guide? Cambodian...
The gypsies in the Rome central RR station wanting to help me buy my ticket at the vending machine? Yep, you guessed it...Khmer.
It's amazing how wide spread these people are.

Time this cheap fuckstain went and moaned in another country... I hear Somalia is very welcoming to his type.
I feel sorry for these people who spend their entire lives in fear of being ripped off - it must be a horrible way to live. For me, if I know a moto ride should be 2,000 reil, I will always pay $1. Life is so much more enjoyable once you learn to overpay a little. I don't have to waste my time and energy getting into negotiations, I have good relations with the people I deal with, and if it makes life more difficult for the likes of Cheapbackpacker, then so much the better.
There's always been a lot of negativity on this forum - it's the reason why I don't look at it too often. I'm a fairly positive person and can't be bothered with people's incessant whining and stressing out about the traffic, dual pricing, shop staff who don't stand to attention and have all the answers immediately when they walk in.
Starkmonster summed it very nicely. It's a foreign country, things are done differently here. Either take the time to learn how things work, or sod off.

Agreed - in extreme cases all it will achieve is ending up without a spleen, like our bamamobile driving (crashing?) friend.

Is Cheapbackpacker the bastard spawn of SCC and the cunt with the 1000r dead goldfish? I quite enjoyed his line about his stomach still turning over a $1 transaction over a week ago. I hope he keeps posting as he is amusing in the sad, pathetic 440 tradition (Splinter, hermes, telesales in his 3 or 4 guises).
