How much would a full time Tuk Tuk driver cost per month?
How much would a full time Tuk Tuk driver cost per month?
Most days I might spend 10$ per day on Tuk Tuk's and sometimes way more. I don't want a to buy a Moto cause I hate driving them and more often than not I'll be a bit pissed when I get my final Tuk Tuk home.
I also don't want to ride Moto's cause I prefer to wear helmets and there's often people with me so i was just wondering what the going rate for full time drivers are? I'd even be happy for him to do his own runs in between the main times I needed him.
Anyone got an arrangement like this with a Tuk Tuk or Moto Dop?

Every time I've heard of someone doing this, it ends up not working out. They're going to want the money for the month upfront and, after that...guess what happens? They stop answering their phone when they see it's your number or they answer and make up some excuse for why they can't pick you up today. Once they've got your money, there's no incentive for them to provide the service you've paid for. Tuk tuk drivers are street hustlers - remember that.

He'll be unavailable and have other stuff to do on holidays, or whenever a family issue arises, or whenever he can get another fare, etc. Even when he is available, you'll bee standing around waiting for him to show up after you call him. some days you might need a ride at 8 a.m., other days you may want to stay our drinking until midnight, are you going to expect him to be available 16 hours day?
You'll still have to take other tuk tuks from time to time, you won't save enough money to justify the inconvenience of this arrangement, that your ability to go anywhere is now tied to the whim of one tuk tuk driver.
One of the great things about Phnom Penh is the great door to door public transport, you can walk out of pretty much any place in the city any time day or night (within reason) and get a a $2 ride to where you are going within 60 seconds. Don't mess with that by trying to pay for all the rides in advance in bulk to one particular dude to save cash.
You're not rally going to get a bulk discount anyway. If you figure out that you need exactly four rides a day from A to B, which is 120 rides a month, and you pitch a monthly deal to a tuk tuk driver, he's going to multiply 120 x the cost of each ride and agree to do it for say, $150 a month. If he agrees to $150 a month, it means he would take you for 5000 riel each time anyway if you bargained enough.

$600 a month full time for a reliable, responsible guy with good English ability.
Some men you just can't reach. So you get what we had here last week, which is the way he wants it... well, he gets it. I don't like it any more than you men.

I had one for 7 years. 150 a month, not on holidays. Never unreliable, except I think he flaked out once and didn't pick me up after work. Not bad for a tuk tuk.

Yeah, i agree with Gavinmac.
Plus if you are a nice person then you might even feel the stupid need to get to know the driver...Maybe one night after you've had a few, you'll buy him a beer or two. Maybe you let something slip - personal stuff about yourself whilst he reveals very little. Next thing you know he's inviting you around for a family gathering, weddings etc.
Before you know it he's trying to set you up with his cousin...
Next thing you know you are sitting in a shack on the floor with the whole clan passing rice whisky around in a circle of people. The ''cousin'' is sat next to you and you break a boiled egg together and tie a piece of string around each others wrists. - They've married you off.
Hell is other people..
We must be cautious..

That's double the $300 a month he's paying for assorted tuk tuks on demand right now.MoodyMac wrote:$600 a month full time for a reliable, responsible guy with good English ability.

I bought a Tuk Tuk about 6 or 7 years ago and its been a massive success. I paid about $800 for the tuk tuk, and about the same for a bike. I got my house guard to train to be a driver and he now drives my kids to school, wife to the market, and me to the boozer, 7 days a week. He lives in so it on 24hr call.
Its quick, cheap and painless. Plus I don’t have to argue with him or try to remember where I live when I'm pissed.
