Which bank is most useful for a foreigner?
Which bank is most useful for a foreigner?
Hi
I am in Sihanoukville now. I carry some dollars I would like to keep in a bank account for safety. I don't need an ATM-card. I just want as good spread of offices as possible over Cambodia to make withdrawals. I may continue to Kompong Cham and Kratie. (I often ask for 10-dollar bills when withdrawing, so friendly service is appreciated
I use Bangkok Bank in PP, but that is a little limited. It is their only office in all of Cambodia and I can not reach the money in any way from f.ex Thailand!
I am a foreigner from Northern Europe.
Which bank should I try in S-ville?
Thanks

Hard to tell from your OP whether you're living here or just travelling? Note, you will require a multi-entry E-Type visa (or A,B,C,K Type visa) in order to open a bank account here, most banks will not accept single-entry T or E-Type visa holders to open an account.
I recommend ABA bank, easy to open account, they have comprehensive mobile & internet banking, they issue Visa and Mastercard debit cards and I have found their service to be the best of all the other banks I have dealt with in Cambodia.

I'm not a negative person, I encourage people all the time...it's usually to f**k off! But, whatever.
Thanks, I'll check.
I have been both travelling and living here during different periods. Right now I am on a one year multi entry visa. I stay in guesthouses and have no permanent address. Let's see if that's enough to open an account?

Should be enough to open an account, I know people living in guesthouses that have.y2 wrote:Thanks, I'll check.

Agreed. Write down the address, leave the guesthouse name off it. Hand it over with your passport and a wedge of cash. If queried on address just say 'I live there'.
ABA are good but don't put all your worldly money in a Kazakhstani owned bank in Cambodia.

That's a good idea. I'll try that.Bosco wrote:Agreed. Write down the address, leave the guesthouse name off it. Hand it over with your passport and a wedge of cash. If queried on address just say 'I live there'.

And check if ABA has offices in the places you want to go. Their number of offices / ATMs outside of Phnom Penh is pretty limited.Bosco wrote:Agreed. Actually ABA Bank is 40%+ owned by the National Bank of Canada since last year.
I have banked with them since 2007 and they have improved a lot and are pretty competitive now.
I closed my ANZR and Canadia bank accounts years ago due to either incompetence or excessive fees
I use ABA mainly for my current account and doing overseas transfers. Getting a credit card is easy but you have to deposit the equivalent to the credit limit you want but that is standard in Cambodia.

I passed two offices in S-ville today.
ANZ needed business license or employment certificate and that I don't have.
Canadia just wanted a bill from the guesthouse (a few days was enough) and the guesthouse business card. Also a photo. To deposit and withdraw I don't need to show my passport they just identify me with the passbook, the photo and signature That will (hopefully) be good since my passport often is with motorbike rental shops. Withdrawals outside S-ville cost $2 and an ATM-card $6. Not many customers in the office, a little bit old "commie vibes" maybe
Edit:
I just read another positive review of ABA. Maybe I ask them tomorrow. Their branches include K. Cham and Kratie.

In the past, I've recommended Cambodian Public Bank. I would just like to retract that recommendation. Yesterday, they blocked my credit card for an overweight baggage charge while I was desperately trying to get on the plane and forced us to exchange all the money we had and barely make it because they couldn't phone me and confirm that it was me who was doing this, despite their knowledge that I often travel in the region and live in Chiang Mai where we were trying to make this payment.
Fuck them.
Fuck them.
I've used CamPu before - and although their systems are good, I found there to be more than enough staff that were tinpot little tossers on personal power trips to make dealing with individuals working there a big problem. I chose to bank elsewhere.

I didn't know ABA is partly owned by Banque Nationale (National Bank of Canada). It's a federally chartered full service banking system founded in the 19th century in Canada, mostly found in Quebec. This explains that, during my research on Cambodian banks, ABA uses BN as a corresponding bank for international wire transfers from Canada. This was an important find for me. As in the past, I failed to get money moved to Canadia Bank. And Canadia couldn't explain why it happened. Another time Canadia could not explain why I could not use my Canada-based bank ATM/debit card in any of their ATMs but my card worked in every other bank's ATM. In sum, ABA got very good reviews and its website is very thorough and helpful.GB77 wrote:Actually ABA Bank is 40%+ owned by the National Bank of Canada since last year.

The Canadians took their stake in ABA nine months ago or more. That's a huge vote of confidence for them from a respected first world bank. I'm very happy in all my dealings with them. Cambodia's only international standard bank, and I include the piss poor ANZ in those failing dismally.

Actually I've followed Canadian banks ever since they were named the best banking system in the world several years in a row post-2008, and "National Bank of Canada" is a bit misleading... It's not even one of the "big five". Scotia Bank has a lot of overseas banks (including South America, not sure if they got burnt there). I originally assumed they were the ones who had taken a stake in ABA. Still, NBC is a "first-world" bank, so it instills more trust than local outfits (if that's a worry). I used to exclusively use ACLEDA, then when their service and rates started going to shit three-four years ago, I switched to CPB. They were equally shit, so I now use ANZ and Prasac. I visited ABA a few times, but ended up with not opening an account.
