SHV:Italians Involved In Knife Fight
More word games.
Jack didn't promise "true story" - that's from gavinmac.
gm doesn't change, does he.
Jack's job isn't to write 'the truth', it's to provide facts and let readers decide - rather obviously.

Of course, now gm's put that into the public sub-conscience as being Jack's job - gm's next step is to attack that 'true' element if gm doesn't personally like what Jack writes, or if what's written doesn't jibe with gm's internal and overriding and overbearing view of what he thinks the world should be like.gavinmac wrote:Jack's job is not to help the Italians, it's to tell the true story and to report on police corruption if it's occurring.

Here's what Jack said:
Are you really quibbling with me harmlessly responding by saying I'm looking forward to Jack giving us the "true story?" If so, I think you're really stretching to feed your "gavinmac is evil" narrative.
I do so much worse shit-stirring on here, you really should hone in on something else.
Jack's a hard-working and determined reporter. He said that the reporting to date about the Italians attacking innocent Khmers is "scandalous bullshit," and that he's doing a proper investigation and report of the facts, including police complicity and corruption.laujack wrote:Reporting of this encounter has thus far (excuse my language) been utter bullshit.
Please stand by for a proper investigation and some facts about what is actually happening, including the compulsory police complicity and corruption.
I speak Italian, am in touch with multiple witnesses and the (now imprisoned) Italians themselves and the idea that this was an unprovoked attack on some innocent Khmers is just scandalous bullshit. The scapegoating of foreigners down here for all the crime is just lazy and baseless.

Basically, right now, after some contact with the families, witnesses and the accused themselves I've been asked by all the parties to delay my reporting on this because it could make things worse for everybody. I certainly do intend to report "the truth" and "the facts" - but i'm worried that if i did that right now, it could actually cause the judges to think of my reporting as loss of face or "foreign interference" and treat the accused even more harshly.
In essence, I'm waiting because i don't want to be responsible for someone remaining in prison even longer.
The families seem confident in their lawyer... :-/

They are obviously not aware that all the lawyers here are buddies with the police . Whist it may seem they are trying to get their clientslaujack wrote: The families seem confident in their lawyer... :-/
out of jail , the exact opposite is the case , the lawyer will keep them in jail for as long as possible , until they are milked dry , and be splitting the proceeds with the police .
I tried to help get someone bail , police chief called a lawyer to act on his behalf , and write a letter of guarantee that he wouldn't do a runner
The lawyer wanted $1500 to write said guarantee . I asked him why so much , he told me half for police .
Seriously , you don't think the police are going to loose a case in this country do you ? That would be some enormous lose of face .

I'm somewhat stuck between a rock and a hard place.
I'm being told my reporting could damage their chances of being treated fairly and have been asked to wait.
For now, that's the plan. It's a tricky one.

As a journalist, isn't your main priority your readers and the story, not the subjects themselves? I can see that it's a moral dilemma.
Good point, but I'd like to think i'm a person first, before being a reporter (don't laugh).scobienz wrote:laujack wrote:

First do no harm, in my opinion. I know that sounds cheesy.
I'm happy to say here, in my personal opinion based on what i've seen/heard, the italians acted in self defense after the Khmer guys attacked first and armed themselves first. Then it all got a bit silly. But the italians were the only ones who were genuinely and visibly injured.
Also, all sides want to drop the charges and let it go, it's a judge who's decided to make an example of all of them (but especially "the foreigners").
Do you know who the lawyer is Jack ?
