Great story.

It is obviously best not to stop but one must have insurance to cover costs later. I wouldn't stop myself now, but I would always have insurance. That time I mowed down the girl on the moto one young chap had a crack at me and said you don't care, do you? I told him to get fucked, of course I don't care. She was a moron and could have injured someone in my car and she didn't care, not my fault.
The other time down the river in Sa Ang when there had been a hit and run fatality and the copper pushed a gun in my face as they checked my car for damage was scarier. Even though my car was a different colour to the offending vehicle I was still in the frame- barang. Fuck them, don't stop.

If it was just a matter of getting fleeced, I'd still stop, try to do the right thing, be contrite, toss money around and try to resolve it before the coppers arrived. And I also have always had insurance, so everybody is going to get taken care of one way or the other. Even if it couldn't be resolved on the spot, I still couldn't bring myself to drive away from dead or injured people over mere money. But you risk much more than money by stopping and doing the right thing. You risk your life on a sucker bet. Violence is not the exception here. 21 years ago in Sihanoukville, my first Khmer language teacher, who was also a sage dispenser of local stories and wisdom, warned me, 'never stop for an injury accident. The people will kill you. Run away. Hide 3 days to wait for blood to cool. Then, if you are a good man, come back to offer some money.' Still seems true today.

Food for thought. It's a serious ethical quandary.
The other side of the coin is you get stories like the policeman who fled an accident in Kampong Cham province a month or two back, was pursued by a village of people on motos and in cars and then lynched outside a wedding party in the next town.

I got into an accident the first day I drove here, it's a headfuck how the whole negotiation and bargaining thing goes down. Little scrote on his brand new bike (80 on the clock) saw me being hesitant turning left, in the middle of the road, not knowing that if you have a truck you just plow on into them, and he disappeared under the front bumper. Didn't touch the car, just slid under. I got out straight away and had a look, we offered him a trip to the hospital, which is a good wheeze for taking him and the bike away from the locale, but no. Bit of a scratch on his foot. He was wearing his helmet. The whole group haggle, interested passers-by, some gave me advice in English, some were pro and some were con. Many hours in the sun, if you can bring more people in who are on your team, you phone up all your nearby family and advocates and the negotiations go on. In the end I just gave money for it to go away, more so than I should, but the bullshit was mentally draining, even after the cops arrived it was mostly sitting in the hot sun as various parties passed forth on their idea of the proceedings. I thought Laos was bad to drive in.

I've seen dozens of accidents outside where i have stayed in Cambodia and others on the streets whilst walking (a couple of them fatal). Never once seen the onlookers turn on them though. To be honest they all seemed to be too engrossed in the ugly side of human nature - ''thank fcuk that's not me'' moment for any violence to occur.
The policeman who Jackal refers to was more than likely being chased BECAUSE he fled the scene.

So very true about the ethical quandry. I think of the story of the dead Irishman, just a few days ago, who may have died, in part, for lack of the offending vehicle stopping to render assistance. This place can be very hard on the soul.Jackal wrote:Food for thought. It's a serious ethical quandary.

My insurance policy says "never leave the accident scene".

Its a nice discussion and I like that we understand we need insurance although its still pretty unknown in this country, I also would never leave the scene except, I see immediately its going bad. Normally it isn't and its just a little bit more expensive - staying, then we think that would be fair. Doesnt matter, we complain about this dark sides ... its our Job to make it better but again, there may be exceptional situations ... where you need to have the right feeling for the situation, which also means you should be sober ... even in Snooky
This was only a matter of time I've seen a lot of these new mini vans going at inappropriate speeds all over town. The Hyundai ones seem worst but a Merc one flew along at well over 100kph last week. These sightings are daytime.

A few years ago in SHV, while stopped to turn left at some junction divider gap with a few cars waiting their turn behind me to do the same, a speeding young cunt construction worker on a very old borrowed daelim came full speed in between the cars and the concrete divider with both Moto and driver, ending sliding on my car left side as I was obviously blocking the mot's path being already half engaged into to my turn.
I had to take keys off his bike and after the blue cops truck came we all went to the police station. The guy was all cut and bruises and very pissed off.
Witnesses and cops were on my side, so I had him borrow 2 months salary from his boss to pay for my damages.
I felt no pity nor remorse in doing so, feeling it might be a better lesson for him if he felt the monetary pain.
