Agarwood/oud, a natural fragrance/oil/incense is produced in Cambodia. Someone asked a question about finding it a few weeks back, either on this site or that 'other' one.
Definitely a 'Cambodia-only' souvenir, if you can find it and/or afford it, as it is one of the few countries still producing it legally.
"First-grade agarwood is one of the most expensive natural raw materials in the world."
"In Cambodia, it is called "chann crassna". The fragrance from this wood is called "khloem chann" or "khloem chann crassna". "khloem" is fragrance, "chann crassna" is the tree species Aquilaria crassna in khmer language."

Truly, I've got nothing better to do.
Why is it a Cambodia only product? Agarwood is grown in many countries in the region. There are large plantations of it in Thailand for example.redhooligan wrote:Agarwood/oud, a natural fragrance/oil/incense is produced in Cambodia. LOS is still an accurate naming, it's just so that the S now stands more for Shite than for Smile...Lucky Lucan wrote:Nobody asked about what you could buy in Thailand. As for the OP, you can buy traditional instruments here that aren't produced anywhere else.
I'm guessing they live in Thailand. Who the hell else calls the place "LOS" anymore?Baconroll wrote:

Palm Sugar bought from the roadside stands outside of Siem Reap. Depending on the batch, has a nice rich buttery flavor that the ones from Thailand don't have. Came in bite sized pieces perfect for snacking.
Dried Mango sheets from Battambang. No sugar added, just flattened and dried. Only available when in season.

Don't worry, be happy.

I like those, but they produce them all over. They call it "Mango Jam."Dried Mango sheets from Battambang. No sugar added, just flattened and dried. Only available when in season.
Unfortunately Cambodia hasn't capitalized on any of these products. While they maintain that these products are the best of their kind in the world, there aren't too many facilities that can process these products and package them to high enough standards for them to be exportable. Hopefully they will realize the potential and do so not too long in the future, otherwise they'll just keep exporting the raw products to Thailand and Vietnam and keep losing out on the big profits.

can use any mango but some varieties are better than others and sugar is optional...the mango is peeled, shredded and sliced, slow cooked, salted with the option of added sugar until porridge like, cooled and spread out on banana leaves and allowed to dry for a couple of hours...removed and dried for another 2-3 days before it's ready to eat...newkidontheblock wrote:Dried Mango sheets from Battambang. She is a cleaning lady in a guest house in the north, which means of course that she is Burmese, as they all are. I am not sure Burmese have the same bias against Cambo as Thais.gavinmac wrote:No Thai person wants anything from Cambodia.

Just get her something that she might actually want. I really doubt that the origin or provenance of the gift is of any importance to her. She's not going to see that something is from Cambodia and think "oh, how interesting, it's from Cambodia."Timeslot Enigmatic wrote:She is a cleaning lady in a guest house in the north, which means of course that she is Burmese, as they all are. What about a couple of cans of Black Panther or ABC beer? That's pretty unique isn't it?

I believe no, apart from excellent quality pepper. As for the rest, you have a lot to learn about shirking.Timeslot Enigmatic wrote:Are there any unique good products in cambo?
This would include preserved food items, crafts, carvings, etc
Good things that cannot be acquired anywhere else. So if you have them or give them as gifts, you know they must have come from cambo.
My question derives from my search for a gift to a Thai friend. But I realized anything I could get in Cambo, I could get in LOS for probably better quality and more selection and of course a better guarantee.
Aside from that, it's almost as if the top 5% are so wealthy that couldn't give a fuck. I know they actively suppress the break up of monopolies.
