Can you actually use dollars for your visa, or do they insist you pay in baht?
Also can you get an ordinary visa there? I assume so.
Cheers.
Is the Had Lek border crossing as terrible as everyone says?

last time i crossed (about July 2015), I used dollars and only paid $5 over the visa price.
Could not be arsed bargaining for the official price. Stood firm on $5 more and they accepted that and we all had a laugh.

Note to self: Must be nice to morons.
Nice one, that was what I was hoping.
cheers.

Did Hat Lek - Koh Kong last year and payed the normal price ($25 ?) for the ordinary visa. M12, greeting me at the border, did have the "official" amount (THB 1200 ?) ready, though after some phoning by the booth housekeeper to his superiors, all was settled. Neither M12 nor I did any haggling. They do know M12 at the border, though that didn't seem to make a difference (nor does it for her regular customer pickups).
I very quietly told him the price should be $25 and I just sat down, letting the local hero sort out the permission. M12 stood aside and in the end very surprised I got the visa for the normal $ price.
No fuss at all, no words, no tension, keep smiling and just relax. As long as it seems I have all the time of the world, it's his problem to get me out before his office closes for afternoon nap or so. Actually, we were quite in a hurry to get to PP before it would be dark.
I also waived the help of all the toots outside, it's no different from the forms stuff you fill out in the airplane.
The visa office, is the last door/window, seen from the Thai side. Stamping of the visa and taking the finger prints is on the first (or second, forgot that) window.
What "convinced" them seemed to be the multiple 1 months ordinary visa in my pp. I got the explanation to go XXX for a 1 year extension. Nobody told him, I would be interested in that (I wasn't).

Wow, good work ! I've never seen anyone pay face. I've crossed 8 or 10 X, but I haven't needed visa for half of them. Back when I did, it was a huge sphincter-pull to get them down to $5 over (25). Lots of yelling and stink eye involved. They wanted 1000B when the price was $20. I shared a cab to KK with some Germans and they had all paid $40. IIWY, I'd just get an E-visa and save yourself the aggravation and a page of your passport. If there's a big line I hand our PPs in to the guys behind the glass door between the 2 windows, with dollar in each, and they process me right away.
I need an ordinary visa, which I think is now $40, so I'll offer them $50 and hopefully they won't be diks about it.

I think it's still $35 or the gov websites need to be updated. I They'll probably want 1500B, but $40 should do it.

thinking of driving up next month for a looksee around the area, ( Kep) as a possible move from here
so wacky, thanks for affirming that they do sell the ordinary visa.
Been 2 years since was last there,
did a quick look an there seem like 10x the number of GH's there now.
Before never had any trouble at Had Lek and always drive in an they always asked me for 100 baht/day for the car i was going to stay and always told them 3 and stayed a lot longer LOL

"We are turning into a nation of whimpering slaves to Fear—fear of war, fear of poverty, fear of random terrorism, or suddenly getting locked up in a military detention camp on vague charges of being a Terrorist sympathizer." HST
1700bht or $45 in case anyone is interested.
I'm sure it could be had for cheaper with haggling.
