Very good point, after a very bad one. I'll edit it out if he asks. Personally on such an important topic as this, I think it should be spread as far and wide as possible. Keep mentioning the author and the KT. As I said before, I'll be checking the Khmer Times out from now on.gavinmac wrote:It's an important article, but I think most of us try not to re-post 1,000 word articles from the local press in their entirety, because that then deprives laujack and the Khmer Times of the clicks and web traffic that they rightfully deserve. This is probably why laujack posted a link to the article rather than copying the whole thing here.Mr Lovejuice wrote:The KT report needs posting here so:

Yes, that would be great marketing...assuming the first company didn't have the full support to do what they like when they like, which is why we are here in the first place. It's way closer to the truth than you think.

I'm aware that it's 2015. However I'm not aware of any huge leaps forward in local justice since whenever. It's not the bus driver I'd be worried about.Poster X wrote: As for her leaving town .. are you serious?? .. this is 2015 .. he is a bus driver ..

Not sure who you think might be after her now. I think her actions should have commanded fear and respect. It does beg the question on how vulnerable the Khmer feel nowadays. 2 Ohkna and multiple moto thieves later. Wish her dad was Liam Neeson from that movie. He'd know how to handle it.Lucky Lucan wrote:I'm aware that it's 2015. However I'm not aware of any huge leaps forward in local justice since whenever. OK I've seen the photo in question and though it's not 100% conclusive that it's a guy paying off a cop, it sure looks like it. A shame laujack editors wouldn't include it, I think it would have been impactful. Then again, a lot of people pay off cops in Cambodia - innocent suspects, guilty suspects, victims, accusers, etc.

Here's another question I have about this Virak Buntham incident and about Khmer companies generally.
Did Virak Buntham investigate the incident by taking the girl's statement, then sitting each of its employees down separately and asking them questions about what happened? Questions like:
1. Did one of you ask the girl to move to back of the bus and why?
2. Did one you change shirts and why?
3. Why the fuck were you at the back of the bus at 3 a.m. getting a blanket?
The Virak Buntham supervisor quotes in the CD repeats the employee's claim that he was merely trying to sleep near the girl. Is it customary for bus workers to change clothes and sleep near passengers during a four hour "overnight" bus trip from Phnom Penh to Sihanoukville?
I suspect that if this happened in a Western setting, and if the manager were competent and wanted to know the truth, he could question the guys and he'd probably figure out that they were violating policy left and right by putting themselves in a position to be hovering over a sleeping passenger at 3 a.m. wearing civilian clothes, regardless of whether it could be "proven" that he attacked her vs. fell on top of her. Then the dude would at least be fired. It sounds like Virak Buntham is perfectly happy to let the guy come back unless and until he's convicted.

How much is the night bus?
Why don't people just go in the day time to PP.
It's only $10.

They don't go in the day time because they want to say the $5 for a night in a guesthouse. Or because they have tight schedules and want to save time and don't want to "waste" a day of sightseeing on the bus.YaTingPom wrote:How much is the night bus?

I've taken night trains in Europe. I can't remember ever taking an overnight bus, except for the 28 hour Greyhound bus trip I took from Seattle to Las Vegas back in 1991.
Anyway, I don't get taking a 4-5 hour overnight bus. It means you have to spend the entire afternoon and evening after checking out of your guesthouse wandering around with your bags stored and no access to a room, then onto the bus at midnight, where you get at most 3-4 hours of sleep, then you arrive in Sihanoukville all groggy at dawn? I don't get it.

VBs management made the situation far worse in fact, there's an additional accusation of assault against their Sihanoukville manager, after he allegedly blockaded "Alice" into a room with her accused attacker and 2 other VB staff (4 in total) before proceeding to shout at her, verbally abuse her and shake her (allegedly).gavinmac wrote:Here's another question I have about this Virak Buntham incident and about Khmer companies generally.

She attempted to defend herself with a flowerpot, which was broken, resulting in VB finally calling the cops (to arrest her!)
I wasn't with Alice at this point, but it was witnessed by other reliable sources (hotel manager).
Mr. Channy is the manager of VB in SHV. He's the same guy who actively blocked police involvement following the robbery of Mr. Van Straaten. Cops have said they plan to bring him in and question him, but regard that second alleged assault as separate. We'll see what actually happens...

I'm guessing no one at VB has agreed to speak to you? I see they were quoted in the CD.
