Cultural Appropriation
Earlier this week someone made a post asking for translation of some English words into Khmer script in order to get a tattoo. Is the O.P white? A barang? A long-nose? If so, he mustn’t get this tattoo. When a white person gets a tattoo with Asian lettering, it’s what is known as “cultural appropriation.” Recently I’ve been hearing a lot about cultural appropriation, so I decided to read a little about it on the internets. When a white person adopts or uses elements of an oppressed (i.e. non-white) culture, it’s cultural appropriation. For example, wearing bindis, ethnic jewelry, Native American headdress, dreadlocks, etc .
Of course, deciding when something is or isn’t cultural appropriation isn’t always black and white. When a Kardashian wears her hair in a similar manner to an African woman, that’s cultural appropriation. When Selena Gomez wears a bindi, it’s cultural appropriation, but when Beyonce does it, she initially is accused of cultural appropriation by white women, only to have her black sisters come to her defense.
How does this apply to Khmer440? Well if Nirvana and Lara Apsara ain’t got brown nipples, they’d best change their user names. However, AIA can keep his avatar.
The wikipedia page for cultural appropriation mentions Ohio University which appears to be a hotbed for this form of political correctness. I also came across a story about Tomoyo Joshi, a Japanese student at Oberlin College in Ohio, who complained that the poorly cooked rice and lack of fresh fish in the sushi rolls at the college cafeteria was disrespectful to Japanese culture-a cultural appropriation as it were.
WTF? At most, she got shitty food and fell for false advertising. She had an experience that is universal. Ordering food from your native country when abroad and being disappointed. It’s rarely as good as at home. This is not cultural appropriation.
If a barang ordered a foreign dish at a Cambodian establishment, be it a pizza, a hamburger, an American breakfast, or a full English breakfast, and the quality of the dish fell well below their expectations, they would do what any reasonable, computer-literate person would do in the 21st century. They would bitch about it online. And invariably others would share similar stories of poor eating experiences. Gavinmac would probably say that when he orders an American breakfast at the said establishment, he expects the sausage and two eggs to be on the plate-not in the server’s underpants. The business in question would lose customers and run at a loss, forcing the owner to place an ad on Khmer440 in an attempt to sell the lease for $60k.
Besides, school, college and university cafeterias aren’t exactly renowned for the quality of their cuisine. I’m not aware of any that have Michelin stars. Anyway, if American attempts at your national cuisine don’t meet your standards, why not just take a cut lunch? Something tells me that Ms Joshi, a feminist studies undergraduate student, is more likely to munch on a cunt-lunch between classes.
And since when are the Japanese an oppressed minority? To generalize, there is a term for Asian students who travel to America for their studies. That word is privileged.
And as for the lack of fresh fish: Ohio is not near the ocean!
I’d even vote for Trump if he promised to send Ms Joshi and her fresh little snapper back to Japan.

Yes Walleye is one of the better fresh water fishes I've ate, I wouldn't recommend eating it raw though(or any fresh water fish).jm wrote:Lake Erie is a thing with fish.
The Jp student sounds brainwashed by some liberal professor(probably the carpet munchie).
Considering the many Asians damn near worship white people, the person wanting the tattoo may not face any problems at all. In the West they may just look like douche. As far as the celebrities that we worship... who the hell cares? They are always trying to look for any reason to gain attention. Oh, and to clarify...
White people like to take from others (see history). If it's not other people from other countries, it's their land, resources, or even their culture (see history). I've seen many expats get Chinese tattoos without even being able to read the languages, get to China and feel that they are better than them.
Do all white people do this? No. Do all people do this? Well, there's a grey area...
Oh, and people who visit other countries and don't take into account that the said countries try to accommodate them shouldn't travel. These people go out of there way to make places more expat friendly. So, they should keep that ignorant and self-important shit at home.

The fact that you know this is gay.LexusSchmexus wrote: Gavinmac has bacon with his breakfast, not sausages. That would be gay.
Just in fairness for the tattoo guy, he wrote he wanted a tattoo in Khmer as a tribute to his "father's side of the family," so we can fairly assume he's part Khmer.
As for "cultural appropriation"....
That would bother me only if the person was a twat about it.

Yes and no. The American dollar has nothing but African references on it...Yet, blacks have been treated more differently than any other culture in the US. Oh, and in Japan they kinda think that people who are extremely fascinated with their culture are somewhat idiots and traders to their own. But I get where you may get that idea.Starving Pelican wrote:What these social justice warriors fail to understand is that, 9 times out of 10, the people being 'appropriated' are actually proud that their culture is being represented somehow, especially in a world where western culture dominates.
Tattoos are for morons.

Well either way, they aren't offended that their culture is being appropriated, are they? Also, plenty of young japanese take working holidays in Australia and get right into the local surf culture, growing their hair long, wearing surf clothing etc. Are they appropriating our culture? Should I be offended?Cynome wrote:Starving Pelican wrote:What these social justice warriors fail to understand is that, 9 times out of 10, the people being 'appropriated' are actually proud that their culture is being represented somehow, especially in a world where western culture dominates.African references on the dollar note? I thought they were all masonry allusions. What are the African references?Cynome wrote:Yes and no. If a Khmer wears jeans and a teeshirt, or an African buys a Big Mac, is that also cultural appropriation?
