Visa questions
They only gave me a 1 month tourist visa at Phnom Penh airport. I paid a guy/agency here in Sihanoukville $300 to make a "1 year visa", I assume that this is an "ordinary visa."
Is there any way to verify that the visa is legit and not just a sticker that he printed up?
Also, would this 1 year visa be "multiple entry"? I intend to go to Vietnam next month for a couple of weeks. Would they stamp me back in on the same visa or would I need to pay for a new visa?

Was there a big letter 'T' or 'E' printed on your visa that you received on arrival, did the visa number begin with a 'T' or an 'E'?
Technically illegal to change from a tourist visa to an ordinary visa without leaving the country, but some places do offer the service at extortionate rates, I'd say more than $300, but if that's all you paid then good for you.
6 & 12 month Ordinary visa extensions are multiple entry, no need to pay for a new visa upon re-entry.
For more information on visas see this thread... http://www.khmer440.com/chat_forum/view ... 4&start=12

I don't remember. But it was most certainly "Tourist" because I argued with the immigration officers and insisted on getting an ordinary visa (as other, old white dudes ahead of me in queue successfully did) but they only gave me a tourist visa.PSD_Kiwi wrote:Was there a big letter 'T' or 'E' printed on your visa that you received on arrival, did the visa number begin with a 'T' or an 'E'?
Did they remove that initial VOA from your passport, or have you not received it back yet?
Pretty sure you've got nothing to worry about.

There is no one year visa. There are only one month visas. You can get extensions to this one month visa, but it is still just a one month visa with extensions. As in I've lived here for ten years or whatever, I didn't get ten "one year visas". I got a few one month visas on entry and extended them. So to answer what I think is you question, 6 and 12 month visa extensions are multiple entry.brownexile wrote:They only gave me a 1 month tourist visa at Phnom Penh airport. Romantic Cambodia is dead and gone. It's with McKinley in the grave.

I haven't got it back yet. Guy said 5 days and sent it Phnom Penh on Thursday, so he claims.PSD_Kiwi wrote:Did they remove that initial VOA from your passport, or have you not received it back yet?

Good to know that it should be multiple entry. Is there any way to verify that the visa is legitimate without going to a border or airport?

So I went to the guy's office today, he wasn't there but his staff still had my passport in their safe deposit box. No visa, and doesn't look like he's even sent it to Phnom Penh yet. I am not sure if I am out 300 bucks here but at least they still have the passport.
Might have been a dumb move to pay upfront. Is that standard procedure? Or do you usually pay half down and half on delivery?

I've only ever paid after on receipt of shiny new visa, but mostly did it in bulk at my old work. I guess it would vary between agencies whether they want cash up front, and being Sihanoukville they probably want cash in case the customer crashes /drowns/od's/gets whacked before collecting the passport.
I've had agencies convert tourist and gratis visas to ordinary visas, but the cost was higher - $120 or so, plus the standard renewal fee, iirc. If that's what he's doing, I doubt you'd get a 12 month extension at that price - more like a 6 month extension.
A legit visa will have a hologram foil, doesn't it. I haven't looked at mine in a while.
What's the agency's name?

So I just got thru to the guy's cell. Someone else said that he "has a problem" and that this new guy now runs the business. He doesn't know anything about my visa but said that he will call me back in the morning. Not looking good...

I think it's strange because the guy rented a car to me twice, helped me find the house in which I'm staying and also it's his name on the business card and shop's sign. Hardly a flight risk with $300... just my luck, may be he really has some problems and disappeared.
