backup a laptop without it turned on?
A scoffer-like question. I admit to being an idiot when it comes to most techy stuff.
I have a laptop that i want to back up before performing a factory reset. However, i have lost/thrown out in a rash cleanout, the power adapdor/charger. I don't want to buy a new one just for the back up. Anything I can do or is my choice between paying for a new adaptor/charger and paying a third party?

Just open your laptop up, remove the hard disk, and buy some cheap docking station (forgot how it's called) for the hard disk , costs about nothing, has a USB connector and you can use it as an external hard disk /accessing your files on any device that has a USB port...
Edit: Not really an answer to your Q, i thought you wanted to retrieve your data and use it with a new device

hi boomer. You did answer my question. i want to retrieve the data so that I don't lose it all and can refer to it should I need it.
Now... I'll have to look at youtube to see how to remove the hard drive, and ask about the docking station thingame with the usb port.
you have helped!

Are you in PP? Then i can do it for you! If you're not, then i still can do it for you, if you book me an all in package of let's say 3 weeks (yes, it does takes some time to remove it) to the destination you're at!

For fun factor why don't you book the trip(?
pew, pew, pew, pew!
Surely easier to ask if anyone has an adapter you can borrow? What is it, Dell, Acer, Mac?

It is in your old travel bag or behind the fridge.

For a non fun factor, i'm a Luxury smoking low life poster who barely manage to stay right above bottom feeder level, as I've posted here before... And I haven't even got a swollen leg that pays for journeys like that...YaTingPom wrote:For fun factor why don't you book the trip(?

Fun factor.. I am definitely in need of a fun reinstall. I seem to have caught sone serious bug. I need some fun. Boomer, can you do fun? I have no idea where I am from one minute to the next, so you would need to be flexible.

Won't you need a new adapter/charger anyhow in order to do the factory reset or to use it afterwards? Or does the "factory reset" consist of having someone else wipe the drive clean before throwing it out or selling it?violet wrote:A scoffer-like question. I don't know. My opinion is that the laptp has died. It wasn't a bluescreen it was something else. I can't remember what. It was many months ago. It couldn't boot up. So my thought was to try to get the data and then wipe it for destructionKpal wrote:Won't you need a new adapter/charger anyhow in order to do the factory reset or to use it afterwards? If it won't boot up it might suggest the HdD has failed.. in which case there is little or nothing you can do.
Cheapest / fastest option would be to be a USB HdD Caddy (2.5") but you will need to remove the disk first so that you know if it is IDE or SATA... while the latter is more likely (if the laptop is less than 5 years old anyway) better to know first than later.

Go to the local Op Shop, they often have a box of chargers / cables etc. You might find one that fits.
I refuse to go out with nothing more than a whimper followed by a small farting sound and a shit stain on my bed sheets..
Just thought I'd share that with you.

Was told the hard drive in my 8 year old HP desktop was bust today.
Got the hard drive back.
Any way data can be recovered here in PP?
Years of documents, music and photos. Backed up to an external drive last time about 4 year's ago.
