Thai King in hospital for a year
You have to say one thing for the guy: he is refusing to give up without a fight. I can't remember a time when he hasn't been sick or in hospital or in some kind of medical crisis, and I first moved to Thailand at least 12 years ago. His heath issues seem to have provided the background for the politics of Thailand for the last decade.

Don't want to be there when he checks out.
He is really loved and respected by a lot of Thais, did lots of genuine work for poor communities.

I wouldn't be surprised if the junta didn't inform the public for quite some time after he passes. It's going to be a shit show for sure. Here's the best analysis I've read in the last few years: http://asiapacific.anu.edu.au/newmandal ... uccession/

interesting;
we live in interesting times
No question there is, as way back the king cut his son off ( refused to bail out his plane in Germany among other things) and thaskin stepped in with tons of $$.Is there a deal being done between the Crown Prince and Thaksin? Thaksin needs the support of the Crown Prince as without an amnesty, he will unlikely be allowed to return or recover his seized fortune. But the Crown Prince also needs Thaksin, who can help legitimise his rule in the most populated parts of the country, especially Issarn, important as he enjoys none of the popular legitimacy of his father.
YEPA weakened monarchy will ultimately undermine the military and bureaucracy. Then and only then, will Thai democracy begin to have a fighting chance.
Nothing scares the generals and ultra-monarchists more than this.

"We are turning into a nation of whimpering slaves to Fear—fear of war, fear of poverty, fear of random terrorism, or suddenly getting locked up in a military detention camp on vague charges of being a Terrorist sympathizer." HST
Would not surprise me if Thailand ended up with a Queen next. That's the opinion of the few Thai people I've spoken to about it too (at least that's what they are hoping). The story of his brother is an interesting one and I only learned about it recently.

I, on the other hand, would love to be there just to see first hand an unprecedented outpouring of grief...vladimir wrote:Don't want to be there when he checks out.

He is really loved and respected by a lot of Thais, did lots of genuine work for homeless dog shelters and apparently invented rain.

With all due respect, I thought he'd been hospitalized for at least a decade already?

The King Never Smiles is worth a read. And it's hard not to see similarities with a certain other SE Asian ruling family, especially when it comes to spending other people's money.

Well, he does own TTM (Thai Tobacco Monopoly) and Siam Cement, among many other companies, so I suspect he may even fund his philanthropic activities out of his own pocket...

Speaking of that: What about Thaksin's attempt to purchase the Liverpool FC for himself with Thai Lottery money 10 years back ? Now that's fucking hubris !slavedog wrote:The King Never Smiles is worth a read.
