Da Nang authorities are verifying accusations that many Chinese tour guides are operating illegally in the central city and providing incorrect information about Vietnam’s history to tourists.
Tran Chi Cuong, deputy director of the Da Nang Tourism Department, said many local guides have complained and provided photos and videos to his agency as proof.
Cuong told reporters that the evidence showed many Chinese tour guides operating illegally and using yuan to buy stuff.
One of them, Xue Chun Zhe, took a group of Chinese tourists to the Linh Ung Pagoda and said Vietnam used to be part of China 14 centuries ago before gaining independence, but currently still depends on China.
According to local tour guides, some 60 Chinese nationals work illegally as tour guides.
One guide, who asked to remain unnamed, said many of the Chinese even introduce Da Nang’s beach as part of China’s sea.
“[They] often tell tourists not to listen to Vietnamese tour guides because Vietnamese hate China,” he said.
According to the local tour guides, many Chinese operate tour companies with a local director acting as a front.
Most of the illegal guides work for these companies, they said.

Oh, I shouldn't worry; there are probably some guides showing tourists around Washington DC, telling them it is a city based on the Holy Roman Empire & beyond. You know, all those obelisks and things. Wait a minute ...

(Mr LJ, no offence meant & apologies for a slant on your thread. Just making a point, mate.)

My understanding of exchanges between Vietnam and China is that China got their butt kicked. one Chinese administrator committed suicide in despair because the Viets refused to submit. He claimed the Viets were ungovernable.

Not sure about that.

.... but it was in 1841 that General Truong Minh Giang committed suicide by poisoning himself when his military and administrative campaign failed in Cambodia. He had been responsible to the emperor for Khmer Vietnamization version 1.0 which Khmers weren't much interested in to his fatal humiliation. Vietnam battled with Thailand four more years for control of Khmerlandia but the Thais got the better of the negotiated peace

And that Johnny is why even today we have to go to Saigon for a good bowl of pho

The Viets were under Chinese rule for about a thousand years, when the territory was all in the north of what it is now. They became independent in the 10th century after defeating a Southern Han fleet, and not long afterwards began their expansion south.
