Why are Khmer people so keen to buy cows?
They aren't used for dairy, I don't believe they are raised for meat. They just stand around all day and fart.
But many of my Khmer friends have bought cows and would like to buy more. Where is the profit? What am I missing?
I know pigs & chickens are raised for meat & buffalo can be hired out to plough fields or pull carts. But I don't know what, if anything, cows are used for.
It seems that the only profit is when they have calves and then they can sell the calves.
Is it a status thing? 'We're a 3 cow family'
Or is it an alternative to buying gold?

They noticed all the white ladies that come to Cambodia seem to be well off so they think buying one of their own will bring good luck.

Finally. Someone who asks real questions. I'd love to have an answer for you but at the moment I can't even think of a smart ass answer (I'm normally quite good at that).
Is this not accurate?

Says they are used for dairy and plowing the farms.

Because " please send money because my chicken needs a heart by-pass" , doesn't sound as desperate as, "please send money because my cow needs a heart by-pass"?
I hear the Thais are cracking down on border runs.
Cambodia should expect an influx of fools who know that a cow heart is worth more than a chicken heart.

Good question, they are expensive enough too, large ones cost well over a grand. The only use I can think of is as draught animals.

Maybe, but I don't know anyone who uses them for dairy.GMJS-440 wrote:Is this not accurate?

Also with the now pretty much wide-spread use of the tractory things cows are used for ploughing less frequently. I still see buffalo pulling ploughs from time to time but don't often see cows.
But the demand to own cows still seems to be there. I spoke to a friend who has buffalo and he hires them out sometimes for about 20,000 per field (about half a days work). A tractor can do the same work in around one hour. The same guy has cows but doesn't hire them out.
I don't really understand why people still want to own cows. I'm sure I am missing something.

Is that the answer? Surely if it was for food they would be actively trying to fatten them up.bigphatt wrote:A kilo of rump steak costs how much?I don't really understand why people still want to own cows. I'm sure I am missing something.
GMJS's article says that they are only slaughtered when they are old. Can't imagine an old Khmer cow is going to give particularly good meat.
Aussie steers are fetching anywhere between $900 to $1200 (AUD) per head at market.

There's a big difference between an Australian cow and the skinny Khmer equivalent.
A steer is raised for food, right?
I'm thinking if they were being raised for food then the owners would be trying harder to fatten them up like they do with pigs

maybe you missed this bit from the article;Khmerhamster wrote:Is that the answer? ""At the end of its working life, skinny white cows or oxen can be fattened and sold for slaughter, the hide tanned and used for leather goods"".
Once slaughtered, they are then quiet possibly sold on to unsuspecting punters as young meat with a price tag to match.

I didn't. I commented on it above.
Maybe you missed my comment...
In my observation. Many cows aren't being worked & they aren't being actively fattened up. So what is the point?
If raising for meat surely you would sell it younger when the meat is better quality.
I wonder is it a legacy sign of wealth. From back in the day when cows were more useful, someone who had lots of cows was wealthy. Now people still associate cows with wealth and haven't noticed that tractors have taken over some of their usefulness.
I'm only speculating.
