I can't stand the idea of spending the entire winter here in Phoenix, so I think I will fly over to SEA and spend a couple of weeks in Hoi An, a week in PP and a week in Bangkok.
In PP I usually stay at a place called the Lux, it's a couple of blocks from the Riverside. I'd like to find a hotel of similar quality, but with a view over the river, with a private balcony, that can fetch me a decent pot of coffee to my room and arrange a safe taxi (a real car and sober driver) when I want to go somewhere.
Any places to suggest...
Hotel Recommendation
I stayed at the Niron Boutique Hotel. River view rooms highly recommended (with balcony) but may be pricey in high season. For good metered taxis you can call 086606060 or 010888010. Can be difficult to get in peak hours. Enjoy.

^looks like a good option for that area of town.
What's up with Lux - just wanting a change?
.... and nice to have the lifestyle where you can just up and go for a few weeks, OP.

Thanks for the tip, looks like a nice place and just the location I want. Is that sub shop (Fatboy I think) still open, I remember it as a making a good sandwich. Also that place down the road (Freebird I think), is it still good. I don't care much for Khmer food, and will probably hit a good French restaurant a couple of times. Any recommendations on that score.
Yeah, I don't work anymore and can pretty much do what I want. I wasn't sure about SEA this year, but I miss Hoi An and haven't been to PP since 2010. I like a nice sleazy atmosphere once in a while to enjoy watching the people parade. PP fits that bill nicely.

If you don't know where you're going, any road takes you there.
I don't know about a sub shop but for good food you have Larry's bar nearby (corner of 110 and 5) or Armand's Bistro for French steaks (108), or Garage for burgers (opposite Larry's).

I guess you can find whatever atmosphere you seek in PP. We could be sat next to each other and have different perceptions....sounds like we would.David L wrote:Thanks for the tip, looks like a nice place and just the location I want. Fatboy on 130, next to Sharkey, is still open and hasn't changed very much. Freebird kept going slowly downhill until Steve of Steve's Steakhouse took it over, which seemed to push it downhill faster. There is a thread here somewhere. I think Raz started it. The whole of street 240 never became what it could have.
I haven't stayed in a Phnom Penh hotel since 2006, so I can't help you there.
Phnom Penh has changed dramatically since you were last here. The vibe on the riverside is quite different with the many family tourists. Walkabout and Martinis are gone. Sharkey changed to a world music venue, then Mike passed. GSM came and went...it's still partially open but you can hear the death rattle. The smaller places on streets 104, 108, 130, 136, etc., have all changed in some way or another. Street 172 has become the new backpacker/lakeside/guesthouses-of-death area, but is ok for cheap food and booze when the sun is up, imho.
Please share your observations after you arrive. Have fun!

as I'm going to be visiting, I've started to think about where to stay... I don't normally like to plan too much however, I'll be there during the Cambodian 'busy' so I thought I'd use this thread as the motivator to start looking at places... can I believe what I see online, that rooms are almost all booked out already for end of the year?
EDIT.. in fact, I hate effin planning .. but really get the feeling I should book in somewhere for at least a few days (and book soon)

No need, I understand almost all of you WILL be out of town at the time I'm there. should be pleasant -apart from the stupid bloody tourists.... of which I will technically be one, but not in spirit... I do plan on being spirited at some point though

I usually don't plan much either, but this trip will be much shorter than my usual 6-3 month sojourn, so I think I'll get all my hotel and air reservations in place.violet wrote:as I'm going to be visiting, I've started to think about where to stay... I like Agoda for hotels in Asia. Many times, like at this Niron place, they book your reservation but they don't charge your card until you show up and you can cancel up until a few days before you arrive. I can recommend them.
