Krabi and Ko Lanta advice
I'm heading to Krabi over Khmer water festival, and thinking of spending a few of the nights in Ko Lanta as well. Any advice on places to stay / things to do?

Neighbouring AoNang, is quieter and nicer, depending on what you want of your visit.
A night swim with the bioluminescent plankton is a must. Normally follows a day long boat trip, beach BBQ etc... but the plankton is something very special.
With the water as dark as a sharks eye, you then jump in
Not the best video but gives you some idea

Nothing but an opinionated tourist. The Pope spends more time in countries than I do ! It is also not my place to comment on a gentleman's dress. A real 23 minute wonder, that obviously knows little about ovens and cooking in Cambodia.

Cool, thanks for the advice. Checked with my better half and yes, looks like we're looking for a hotel for a few nights in AoNang, and then maybe Ko Lanta, unless someone suggests a better island.
I think I might do a night dive while there too, would be really cool to see bioluminescents like that!

Shame the main Ao Nang beach is full of crushed sea shells and dirty (nobody sunbathes on that beach) and they will still be building the sea front wall there i reckon, but plenty of boat trips to nice beaches though as you no doubt know already, just need a boat or car to get to a decent beach if you stay in Ao Nang.

Kho Jum/Jam is nicer than all of the above.
Ao Nang is much more developed and ideally situated for a day trip to Railey Beach.
Krabi Town is relatively quiet with a decent ish market but you wouldn't want to spend too long there.

Personally dont care for Ao Nang at all any more ( was great back in the 90's) . Although the back drop is beautiful its a not a good area for swimming and its way over developed and u need take a boat to Raliay beach, its also not cheap
Krabi town is just another thai town, not much to see or do
I'd skip Ao Nang an just head to Koh Lanata, its only another 2 hours. If ur driving make sure u stop just south of town and visit Wat Tam Seua ( tiger temple) and if feeling strong walk the steps to the top for fantastic views .Takes about 45 minutes,
I do like Koh Lanta,, there is a bridge now so u only need do one ferry, I usually stay on the first beach ( think called Long beach) at The Lanta bee Garden Bungalows,http://www.lantabeegarden.com/ small operation, no pool but right on the beach
whats best is its not far to town for some shopping and excellent seafood restaurants,
How are u traveling?
Lanta has really been built up in the last 4 years or so but still nice before the European crowds arrive end of nov
IF it was me, i'd fly onto Phuket and stay a few days,( much nicer than Krabi) than rent a car from Davids car rent an do a road trip taking in Krabi, Ao Nang, Lanta .Expect to pay around 9,000 baht R/T on air asia make sure u book the whole trip under one ticket
if driving from Phuket u can also stop at the Monkey temple outside Phang Naga and visit the shell cemetery outside Ao Nang

Ko Lanta has some wonderful beaches but you need to drive down to the south of the island. Best to hire a car at the airport so you can beach hop at your leisure.

The best restaurant on the island is the Red Snapper back up at long beach. Excellent tapas in a beautiful garden setting.

Thank you very much everyone for all of the input. We bought cheap tickets to Krabi way back in March, the kind you buy and hope to use, but if life gets in the way you take it in stride. But now that's it's come to fruition, I guess I should make a plan or two.
We arrive in the evening, so need to stay in the greater krabi area. We figure we'll head to a locatikn for that night, be it Ao Nang or likewise, spend another day and night, then head to Ko Lanka. We'll probably do two days of diving wherever we end up. Then we have another day or two.
Just trying to put that all in context - plans very much open! Any forthcoming advice still appreciated

Be aware that there's nothing much to do in Krabi town.
Ao Nang is ok but it's moreorless the same as every other beach strip in Thailand.....standard Irish/English bar, Indian restaurant, Italian restaurant, suit shop, t-shirt stall, repeat. The "beach" at Aonang isn't very nice btw.
The road ends at Ao Nang and you have to get a longtail boat if you want to go to Railay beach (which is actually what most people mean by Krabi)
If you arrive in the evening you could probably still catch the Ko Lanta ferry. It's about an hour/hour and a half drive from Krabi airport. Can book a hotel close to the main town, Saladan, and wake up to a beautiful beach vista in the morning. Hop in your car and drive around the island to check out all the beautiful beaches.
