Hmmm. Angkor International is not a flop house, the corner of 148 and 13 is not a red light district, and the Cambodian polce and newspapers are not reliable sources for detailed info or forensics. That said, i would have guessed the 'heart attack' death of a 34 year old male tourist as drug related even if the paper hadn't said so. 'Family man' doesn't make a drug death any less likely, though more tragic. And being a journo...well, sometimes I think substance abuse goes with the territory.gavinmac wrote:Jesus Christ, why would you be "more than a little disbelieving?" of a drug overdose. Do you suspect that a serial killer is going around killing all these 25-50 year old men who keep dropping dead in Daun Penh and making their deaths look like drug overdoses?kinard wrote:Perhaps sensitive to the cause given by Cambodian authorities. [Edit]
I appreciate that his employer describes him as a "family man," but straight-laced family men normally don't choose to vacation alone in Cambodia's red light district.

With every expat death you deride for shit and giggles, you're inviting karma to ensure you are one day found dead on a toilet with your pants round your knees in some Daun Penh guesthouse. I hope the photos don't make it on here.

2 blocks from Street 136, 2 blocks from 172, about 2 blocks from Street 51. Red light district.
Flophouse.
“Not suitable for ladies to stay”

Stayed in this hotel because of good reviews. Terrible choice. In my opinion, not suitable for ladies especially if traveling solo. I ended up sharing room with my friend while her husband took my room. Not a good neighbourhood too. Luckily it was only an one-night stopover.
“This place is a nightmare!!”

I visited this place in July 2015 with a girl friend. When we reached the hotel, the room which we booked online was horrible. Lizards ran around the room. We paid extra and upgraded ourselves only to find out that the bathroom had no door. We asked them to change our room and they gave us room keys one at a time to go and check the room by ourselves. We settled for a room and just when we unpacked we realized that there were no sheets and no phone to call the reception. When we get to the reception, the extremely rude staff told us that they don't have any sheets and we have to live with it or leave. It was 11 in the night and we had driven from Siem Reap. He wouldn't compromise like going to other rooms and looking for it. He shouted at us saying that they are short staffed and WE HAVE TO UNDERSTAND. At 11 we decided to leave. He gave him the keys and asked for a refund and he said "in Cambodia we don't give refunds and you can leave the hotel". Can you imagine this? He started to close the hotel doors and wouldn't even call the manager. It was a nightmare. The manager eventually come who was a very sweet lady and after half an hour (around 1230am) decided to refund the money. She gave us all in cash and requested us to stay at night given that we were two girls with no back-up plan and she considered it unsafe for us to look for a hotel so late. Only because of the kind consideration of the manager, I have given it one star. Besides, our bad experience, the location may be central but it is literally next to a long lane of massive garbage and is unsafe to walk in the night. I would never recommend this place.

The beds were horrible!! There was bed bugs everywhere. One of my friends who stayed in the same is currently suffering from really bad reactions thanks to the bed bugs on the beds they provide us!! I've already sent you a personal email asking for refund for this terrible room conditions! My email is [email protected]. Kindly reply my email as soon as possible with the necessary steps of actions.

The hotel from the moment you arrive seems nice, but how wrong can judging a hotel from its reception be?! The room was dirty, old and probably the least well equipped of our entire holiday. On our first night there I cut my foot open on a shard of glass in our room. On reporting this to reception, not so much as an apology was given. They did offer to move us to another room but after hearing about the rest of our parties rooms with toilets overflowing and the smell of sewage in their rooms we politely declined. Would I stay here again.... Not even if you paid me!

Price was an issue for what we got, was made to pay upfront apone arival so I wasnt able to run for the hills as soon as I walked through the doors of my "sanctuary. " No power points but the one for the fridge. Evidence that my bed had been slept in befor I had arived (suspisious stains & a finger nail), I'd have to say bed was simply just remade not resheeted. Definatly no four star rating from tripadvisor. Expected the royal treatment, ended up getting the end result of a four day bender trashed hotel room from that scene in 'fear and loathing in las vegas." I advise my misadvisors (tripadvisor) to reevaluate there 4star review, surely its a fraud/forged document hanging in there hotel lobby.
“Avoid”

It was inevitable for me to submit a negative review as me and my partner had booked three nights and only managed to stay the one night before leaving. I only think it's fair to tell our experience to try and avoid or improve the situation.
We were not met with a happy greeting at the front desk after a 7 hour bus across the boarder, nor any information about the local area, well actually not even a smile. Putting it down to he could of been having an off day, we took the room key and headed to our room. First thing we noticed was the smell of smoke, as we opted for a non smoking room it wasn't really good enough. It was dark and dingey, little light from the window and of course nothing like the picture we had seen online when booking. Then we noticed the dirt on our bed sheet, realising it hadn't been changed I went downstairs to ask the same 'non smiling' man if we could have our bed changed. He radioed and got the bed changed pretty promptly. Giving up on the nap idea we did not notice until that evening that indeed the bed sheets were still covered in stains. The next morning I found the worlds biggest cockroach in the bathroom. My partner pulled out clothes and found another one crawling out her bag. Not good enough for £18 a night. The only positive was that they did not charge us the remaing two nights when we insisted that we leave. The manager was radioed at the front desk whilst we explained how unhappy we were, but couldn't care less.

I had $700 stolen from my wallet whilst having a massage at this hotels Spa. I reported this to the management of the hotel, but they completely denied it happened and refused to accept any responsibility. I was even able to tell them who did it but they wouldn't do anything about it. Stay here at your own risk.

I can do better than that. So long we are doing history, a few years back there was a room invasion there in which some Japanese tourists were robbed in their room (at gunpoint I think) and held hostage for a short while. May have been assaulted too. I don't recall. Still not a flophouse. Still not in a "red light district." Though I was mildly horrified to read in the Sept 2015 review that there were "lizards running around the room" until I realized he was talking about ching chok and not Vietnamese hookers.

Yeah, I remember the Japanese girls being tied up there, but I decided to stick to current info, 2015 or later, about rooms smelling of sewage and guests checking into rooms with bed sheets that haven't been changed.

Funilly enough I was just wondering this evening where my old pal Ken had gotten to - hadn't seen him posting in ages.

Yet we all must shuffle off, Scoobs
Anyway, that place is overdue an OD. It was my base for about a year a decade and a half or so ago. The staff sold squares of tinfoil for 100 riel at 4 in the morning, but they couldn't work out where all the teaspoons went.

What a lovely bunch of posters here.
I think there is more to this bloke's death than has so far met the eye.
What a shame gavinmac chooses not to use his investigative talents here. Maybe he's too busy on legal matters for the casino mafia or the CIA has him tied up on important matters. Or dirnking and chasing young Cambodian whores. I think the death of this guy will turn out to have a more interesting story behind it than other matters gavinmac has chosen to investigate - lies of an ex-con, for example. And there are not many people in Cambodia who have investigative skills.
As for poster ken svay, NZ Herald has never been owned or controlled by Rupert Murdoch. But I expect such lies from an Aussie so classy he cannot think of a clever, funny or interesting user name for this little social forum other than that of a Cambodian artist. Which he is clearly not.
I know Khmer 440 is famous for having heaps of mis-information - that's been my experience as an occasional reader - and accurate information is not the point of posters to this social forum. But maybe Scobienz should somehow try to set up even a rudimentary fact-checking system. I guess that would take the fun out of posters trading insults and lies.
I'm no investigator. But here's what I suspect so far. This guy Adams was not on a holiday. NZ Herald is covering up for something. What was Adams doing in Cambodia? Good question. Why this choice of hotel? It does not make sense. I think the drugs story could be manufactured. As has been mentioned, Cambodian police aren't exactly models of forensic examination. But taking drugs is a possibility. Did Adams really have a heart attack? Possible. Lots of questions.
I can see why gavinmac or anyone else would want to be bothered with an investigation. But the profile of this guy does not fit that of the usual lowlifes that run into trouble in the KOW.
Just think there is a more interesting story here that merits more than nasty and dismissive statements from posters.
