No Country for old men?
When I came here two years ago I had just turned 61. I applied at several schools and had a full-time position within two weeks (and was getting calls from the other schools where I applied offering positions). The criteria then seemed to be "Caucasian and a pulse" (many of my colleagues had never taught).
I returned here last April (now 63). I have applied at MANY schools, had several interviews and zilch! At one school the other contender for the job was a young lady with a very strong French accent; I could hardly understand her. She was hired. I have over 40 years experience teaching ESL/EFL.
From my own observation (and experiences) it now seems to be "Caucasian, breathing, young, preferably female".
Any comments would be appreciated.

You summed it up succinctly... "Caucasian, breathing, young, preferably female"

They don't seem to like people that leave and come back. Not sure why?johntpartee wrote:When I came here two years ago I had just turned 61. Maybe it's something to do with the work permit?
Plenty of 60 + alcoholics that have been teaching here years holding down jobs. They are often extremely obnoxious to the students I've noticed and reek of alcohol, but that doesn't seem to matter. I don't think it's your age; although, they definitely do prefer a female over a male. Keep trying, you'll find something.

I have the work permit. I've asked several schools if my age was an issue but of course they said...
I'm still trying.

You might try wearing a skirt , a padded bra and a blonde wig. As long as you avoid Robw you should do just fine.

Honestly, if you're over 50, why not Thailand? Or the
PI, they like older gentlemen there?
After about age 57 or so, it can get dangerous here, unless you're a drug addict or alcoholic, then all your friends protect you.
Thailand is a saner place ...

Thailand? NO WAY! If you're over 30, forget it (at least it was that way two years ago). On the same note I JUST NOW got a reply from a school that I applied to last week and they told me that my age was a concern (I mean that literally; came straight to this site after I thanked them for being forthcoming).

I think ACE does not discriminate aging people as long as you have proper credentials and up to the job, but might be just the campus where I usually ride past every day. Seriously if my hand is not tied I would head to South Korea or Taiwan as many teachers are flocking to China because of the stagnant salary. Over 2k a month plus free housing and airfare, severance arent bad. Save up for a year or two and kick back in Cambodia.

Come and teach in Myanmar.
I'm on my second 'gig' in the country (first was in 2012/2013). Been teaching here for a few months and just been offered a job at another school in Myanmar with an 87% pay-rise over my current job! (I was saving $1,000 USD every month, should now be able to save $2,000 USD...)
Needless to say, I'm going to accept
I'm hitting 58 years old, age isn't an issue if you can do the job.
As for wearing a skirt, that definitely helps, since 90% of Myanmar males wear one
Me in my longyi...

Do you have to teach the bambinos for that kinda cash? When I looked at that site you posted on the other link, all I could find were jobs for kindergartens looking for females? Do you think there are a lot of private teaching possibilities there? What have you heard the average hourly rate for privates is?simon44 wrote:Come and teach in Myanmar.

Welcome to Asia in general I would say. It's all about bums in seats, not quality of teaching. They have loads of foreigners without qualifications, but with native accents that would make ideal teachers. If only the schools invested some money and time in training them.johntpartee wrote:It just seems odd that experience is a liability.
But, all I hear is how the ESL teachers here are no good blah blah.
