Why not China?
Ive been poking around at teaching jobs in China, it seems pretty good. Like Korea, it seems the Gov't is mandating a minimum of a B.A. for a Z visa, but if you have it and some experience, it seems teachers are in high demand. One teaching center is offering 12000-15000 RMB, plus 3000 housing, 8000 flights, Visa and health ins. paid. 10 days Paid holidays, 15 sick days and all Chinese national holidays. That's 100 teaching hours a month, and a 40 hours work week with 2 days off. Max 4 students per class.
Some Uni jobs are offering free housing and 8000 RMB, but only 17-20 hours teaching (but I suspect you will prep a lot more, with classes of 40 or more students) Maybe more stuck on campus and not experiencing city life as much.
I was thinking, why not China? One thing comes to mind is that in Cambodia, teachers are respected more or less. Perhaps not so much in China? I don't know.
Whats it like to live and work there, anyone have some first hand experience?

The problem with the world is stupidity. I'm not saying there should be a capital punishment for stupidity, but why don't we just take the safety labels off of everything and let the problem solve itself?
I don't have any first hand experience there, but have been thinking about teaching there off and on. My wife has visited there twice and I speak some basic Mandarin. Jobs for teaching English appear to be more plentiful there than anywhere, plus if you also have a engineering background or oilfield that can bring some additional money. For me, China is on hold until I see how relations are between the US and China with Trump as the new president.

It's possible these days to land jobs in China that pay substantially more than elsewhere in Asia. +25K RMB.

That's the main reason I've never bothered though two of my former colleagues are pulling in mucho yuan there these days. I was offered a juicy IELTS examining job there not long ago but... meh.

The salary you're quoting is definitely NOT the norm. Usually you'll see 5-6000 RMB per month, housing provided, travel bonus, end of term bonus, etc. It's good money and prices in China are very low so you can save quite a bit. This is for university jobs in rural areas. Classes will be 20-40 students and are some of the most disruptive uncooperative learners you can imagine. Most Chinese see foreigners as childish, living and breathing clowns. I've been in China many times and was only able to tolerate it at two year stretches, after that it will play havoc on your sanity.

I dunno, for fun I posted my CV and have had a shit ton of mail. I have not seen that low, most are beginning around 8, and some are beginning at 15. How long has it been since you checked?

I have heard that Kunming is different from much of China and a fairly nice place from someone that has years of ESL experience. Before I would go anywhere in China, I would review the levels of pollution.

Ahh... but I'm talking about qualified teachers with years of experience at accredited international schools, so for us it is the norm...johntpartee wrote:The salary you're quoting is definitely NOT the norm.

I am a qualified teacher with MANY years experience at accredited schools. Granted, you will see places with the high wages but they are almost always in Beijing, Shanghai, etc., and the devil is in the details.
I am currently teaching English in China after 13 years teaching in Phnom Penh. My monthly salary is about the same as PP but includes apartment and utilities and I teach less than half the hours I did. Also, the cost of living - food, transport etc. is lower than PP. Anyone interested in my experience to date, feel free to PM me.
