The only reason they might target foreigners is because of the incessant disdain shown by many of them to Cambodia and its institutions.
Try looking in a mirror sometime. :-D :axe:
once again you fail to appreciate the consequences of foreign business and its negative perceptions here.

Once again Abou-Ger edits his post after he gets a response. What a tiresome, mendacious and squalid imbecile.

Let me see if I understand this correctly. Is it your contention that the government which, on the one hand, actively encourages foreign direct investment into the country as an integral part of its economic development plan (by giving tax breaks, creating SEZs etc) will also whip up anti foreign business sentiment at the next election?

It makes you wonder why they are opening chambers of commerce around the world, and aggressively targeting UK, US, Australian, Russian, European, Japanese, Korean, Thai and most notably Chinese investment into the country.

I'm starting to notice a trend on 440. There is a orrelation between a poster's confusion about basic economics and finances, and their own personal financial situation. I suppose that makes sense. If you're clueless about how the world of business and economic works, it's understandable that you would spend your life in a piss-stinking apartment, railing bitterly about being cheated on the price of a pineapple.

Either way, I don't know what RobW and I have to do with it. You're an odd one.

a foreseen response. as you may or may not have noticed, the wealth generated by the direct investment is only directly helping two groups. the cpp and the investors. I'm not going to talk about different companies because in the end its not what i think that counts.
eg. haven't you considered that the majority of people know who own/ direct the mfi's? if they are angry about them they will be angry about who owns them.
anyhow, although a joke reference no escape played on the idea of a popular sentiment of foreign companies up to nasty tricks. like the Vietnamese, it doesn't matter whether they are right or not.

i know a lot about things i'm interested in. making lots of money has rarely been a part of that interest.

I'm aware of no anti foreign business sentiment. I suspect if you did a vox pop of ordinary people you would get exactly the opposite view. The only anti-foreign sentiment I see is more directed towards the growing trend of asshat broken expats who end up getting punchy in GSM, or driving their BMWs into tuk tuks.

Can't blame them really.

The above comments exclude Sam's attempts to whip the masses up into hysterical hatred of the Vietnamese, of course.

I have done informal surveys since the last year up to now with people I know from motodops to police to the military, out of those roughly 50 only 1 longed for the status quo.

The social media plays a powerful impact on people's views across Cambodia on how they view politics and the suppression they or their family directly experienced in the last 2-3 decades. Most younger generations are anti current ruling party and some are very hardcore LDP party -- frankly I like Khem Veasna and indirectly support him.

Cambodia's natural resources are already butted fuck and can't think much of what Cambodia's major export other than rice and labors too if that count. I suspect the encouragement of direct foreign investments help to provide some people temporarily adequate livelihood and stay happy and enrich the rich. For now.

Hun Manet seems like a likable person, even he might has the Cambodia's interest at heart when he takes the throne people still hold deep hatred and vengeance against his dad, the family tree, that also includes his cronies. Even that aside, Cambodia has to come up with some very innovative to catch up with their neighboring countries in the future ahead.

Unlike the past generations, this generation is hard to tame if the man continues to control the country with an iron fist and allowed his cronies to act with impunity. When push comes to shove a civil war will happen. But that is just my thinking.

I see thee trickle down effect 1st hand. Surely, as a fellow tefler, albeit a lowly one compared to my a-i-a type of role, can you not see a direct link between a middle class and employment opportunities for white, middle aged, loser alcoholics?

I see very slim chances of free and fair elections being allowed to occur.
I will be very surprised if the CNRP exist come 2018.

That was my thinking in creating the thread. People saying they are only commune elections are right, but the way these elections play out, the result that is either contrived or allowed to happen, and the CPP response to that result are of paramount importance. It's a big big deal.

I agree, it is of course a big deal. However it's a much quieter big deal than that usual electioneering nonsense with banners and convoys blocking the streets etc.
The way the results are perceived will be interesting, but I predict that most communes will be very conservative in their voting.

From what was expressed to me is that there is a fear of retribution from the strong man (will not let go) & a distrust of any succession, so on with the status quo. The divide between the untouchables & the suppressed will work for now until someone as charismatic as Pol Pot can come & motivate the masses, until then it will be uneventful but yet the greater the divide the more it will be inevitable!

you're sounding a lot like Jeremy Irons in Madame Butterfly here. No idea whatsoever at what is happening under your very nose. remember the bit when he advises the ministry of the Chinese love of the westerner and not to worry about the Chinese in relation to US intervention in Indo China?

I can't believe you have no idea about this foreign resentment. How many third world shit holes have you worked in...
