Interesting article in the DM here about type 2 diabetes and whether it is a 'real disease' or should be re-branded as a lifestyle problem.

Having had an uncle die from diabetes last year, I'm aware of what a horrible condition it is and how horrible a way to die it is.
Doctors now saying they would rather have HIV than diabetes as it's more treatable and life expectancy is longer.
And lots of studies now saying that, if like me, you are in your 40s, enjoy the good things in life, sometimes a bit too much, now is the time to become more active, the general message being that leaving it till your 50s is probably too late.

Lots of diseases have environmental causes. Should we reclassify black lung since it's caused by coal dust?
I've heard similar sentiments from Cambodian sufferers although I think they were thinking of the free medicine and care they could get from myriad NGOs that focus on niche diseases.slavedog wrote:Doctors now saying they would rather have HIV than diabetes as it's more treatable and life expectancy is longer.

By reversible do you mean preventable? Reversing a condition would mean curing it, surely.Gin&Tonic wrote:Yep, it's a lifestyle problem. It's also reversible. Cut sugar, lower carbs, increase exercise.

Malnourishment of the mother during pregnancy is still a major factor. Apparently, the fetus mutates its DNA to allow the cells to hold more sugars so as to compensate for low dietary input. This change remains in the child, and even gets passed from mother to child once established. With so many in the world able to eat a more fat and sugar rich diet - special shout-out to the US food companies that have moved into the emerging LDC markets and are equiped with this data- the proliferation of type 2 is becoming epidemic in proportion.

This study provides the first direct evidence, using individual famine exposure data, that a short period of moderate or severe under nutrition during postnatal development increases type 2 diabetes risk in adulthood.

It is a real disease. People with type 2 diabetes make insulin, but their cells don't use it as well as they should. Doctors call this insulin resistance.
At first, the pancreas makes more insulin to try to get glucose into the cells. But eventually it can't keep up, and the sugar builds up in your blood instead. Yes you maybe correct that diabetes can be prevented with lifestyle change however there also unavoidable causes that many people with the disease can't get away from. Diabetes can also be passed on from one generation to another through our genes. Despite the advance technology nowadays, we can only hope to alleviate ourselves from the symptoms of the diseases and maintain the medications in order to live longer. However, we already have studies right now for better methods and safer options without the need for medications.
